Out Patient struggles in light winds

Last weekend was Two Harbors number 2.
Eric from the CAL 29 "Barefoot" and I sailed in the non-spin class on "Out Patient". Our class had 11 boats in it. The wind forcast was 8-10, light and Variable.
The start was light and we were heading in the right direction but no wind and a lot of downhill current. We ended up tacking to make the pin. After that the no wind and large swell made it difficult to keep pointing in a direction. We finally started moving and was able to start picking off the boats one by one. By the time we made it to the first mark we were 7 th in the fleet. We passed a couple more boats but we couldn't catch the leaders. The wind was probably up to 4 knots and we were moving 3.5 and 4 knts on a broad reach. Once we rounded the final mark we headed to Ventura Harbor to finish the race. However halfway there the wind started to die and die. It was slow going for the finish line.
We ended up tied for 7th after everyone corrected out on us.
2 more races left in the series.

Randy,
Wow! When I read your post I thought you had to go to Two Harbors in Catalina and return in one race, with adverse current on your return and no wind! Then it dawned on me the two harbors were Ventura and Channel Islands. Whew! Nothing worse than spinning around helplessly in wind drifts at two am, with all the sea critters coming buy to LYAO at you. Been there, done that! (nothing worse than having a dolphin, a sea lion, and a giant whale shark swim by and laugh hysterically at you all in the space of half an hour)
Meanwhile, congrats on your race, it's nice you had such a good turn out of boats.
Jerry
