CAL 20 First and last ride of the season

Greets all; Well last weekend I finally brought the trailer back to Chris B who was kind enough to take me out for the day on his finaly restored CAL-20 WeeHope. What a day. The weather called for a high of 60 and sunshine with winds gusting to 25knots. Woohoo a real test for the little jewel. Comming from where its snowed already this was going to be a treat. Well it was a treat but not as per how the weatherman claimed. We started out around 11 as the winds were gusting around 30 and it was cloudy, overcast and a max I would say 45 degrees. What a day. Three layers of clothes, a good lunch and liquid to keep us from being dehydrated and we were off for the day. Sailing around the bay was shear pleasure. Chris was kind enough to hand me the tiller durring the early part of the day when the winds were gusting and we were in full swing. Whats interesting to me about the little boat is that she sails completely different then the CS22 (aka Catalina 22) that Im used too. Its hard to explain but she just behaves the way a sailboat is supposed too is about as best as I can describe it. One thing not to do on a CAL20 is stand up in kockpit and place the tiller between your legs when going down wind wing on wing. My ear and port side is still recovering. A manouver that is not common on a CS22 as the boom is much shorter. Much shorter...:) Anywho it was a good day. I know understand why those who have one of these small craft enough them so much as they are simple, elegant and darn fine sailing machines. Cant waite till next summer when mine gets done. Still looking for a boat to take to Florida for the winter. At this point looking around Chesapeake and lower States as the time line is getting short.....er. Best always. /ch

And of course you were right about the 20 Chris. And yes, thanks to Mr. L for such a sweet boat. There's a super deal in MI if anyone is interested. If I did not own a project, I would grab this one without hestitation as it will be cheaper down the road then the project that I have on my hands next spring. If interest see: http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/boa/1431940364.html I really hope someone buys this before I do something really stupid...:) Best regards /ch

Halfway up there I stopped at an old boat show. A friend there knew I was going up to look at a Cal 20. I asked what he thought. "Buy it," he said. I did. Best buy I ever made. Last night the same guy called me. He wants to downsize from his Bristol 30-something. He wants a Cal 20. I think he had already found that Detroit area one and has talked to the seller. But I told him I'd ask on the list--are there any other Cal 20s for sale somewhere near Michigan? Chris Campbell happy owner of Cal 20 #1220 > > . > >

Chris C: Ive studied those pics on that boat in detail. Scraped them from the site, zoomed in on certain aspects etc etc. Given the inventory is as described and given that it comes with a trailer, a nice aftermarket one, my thoughts are this one is a steal at that price considering what its gonna cost me to complete my project vessel Engine aside, me thinks she's a keeper. Best regards and best of luck /ch
