I have Navman instruments as well and they are all in various states of
disrepair. I forget who bought them out but I was told they are no longer
serviceable . . . is that not the case? Do you know who I can contact for
service?

Fred,
I am not completely familiar with the 3100 but typically these display
units go through a self test when they are powered on. Do you recall if this
was the case when it was working normally? If not, was there any other
indication that the unit was on? If there is no indication that the unit is
powered up, check the power to the unit. If the power situation checks
good then you might consider a trip up the mast. If you get the sensor off
the masthead you will probably need an interface cable to connect the sensor
to the display unit. I would be surprised if both units were not of the
same gender. If the sensor still does not send data to the display then you
might consider contacting Navman and finding out about repair/refurbish
programs and possibly send the unit back to be worked on. BTW - how old is
the unit?

Wayne,
Thank you for your quick response. I believe I understand what you
explained.
Yes, it is a 3100. It was working beautifully when I went to bed on July
4, and there was no data on the head the next morning. The joint in the cable
is buried inside my mast, so that would be the last thing I'd want to
inspect. My thought is to climb the mast, disconnect the bird, bring it down
and plug it into the head. That would eliminate the cable, but still wouldn't
tell me which if either unit was on the fritz. All i know about
electricity is that I can't see it and it can kill me.
Have you any suggestions?

Fred,
Which Navman? Wind 3100? This unit accepts NMEA 0183 inputs but it will
decode only a very limited number of sentences. Basically, only speed
thru the water and speed over the ground. The NMEA interface is intended to
get limited data from a GPS. What you want to do may not work. I'm just
guessing here but the data the head is getting from the masthead unit is
likely propriatary. Plus, by the time you get done with the masthead unit and
the conversion box to 0183 you might as well just replace the old masthead
unit or get a whole new TackTick system. Pricing we should definatley talk
about off list. Notwithstanding the foregoing, I'll check the technical
details for you.

Navman is part of the Navico stable of brands and has been folded into the Northstar line. While Navman is still a brand in the rest of the world it no longer has a presence in the US. You can reach Navico at the locations listed here: http://www.navico.com/en/About-us/Locations/Americas/

Wayne,
I am glad that you continued the thread -- you have provided useful information to a lot of us on the Cal Yahoo Group. Commercial information is not bad if it is provided as a helpful source and not as flamboyant self-promotion! (See Joe DeMers' emails.) Thanks for your continuing this supply of information.

And along this line... Practical Sailor's new issue has an article on
wireless masthead instruments. I didn't read it, since that stuff is
too spendy for my budget, but the same issue reviews the Rhodes 41 and
has a couple gorgeous photos of a breathtaking boat. Phil Rhodes's
sheerlines can make you weep.
