liveaboard to sailing? ( dream obstacles)
Jerry Garcia2009-11-12 03:01 UTC
Damn Charlie,
You ARE the Cal 25 Guru! Through all the readings from this group, you seem to have the most rebuild or as you say ,"Rehab" info on Cal 25's.
I'm still living on mine down here in the Keys and have done little work on her since moving back on board a couple of years ago. Before I moved back on board, when I was living with my ex-girlfriend, I hauled her out and did all the bottom work. I also removed my old bulkheads and spent many weeks removing the aft half of the deck plywood core. The 2 inner teak frame pieces that were attached to each bulkhead are now resting on the raised floor by the head and supporting the deck under the beams that the sliding hatch sit on.
Due to having all my stuff in the boat, it's a bit hard to replace the deck core while I live in her. My initiative in my work has plummetted and I might be suffering from what's called down here, "Key's Disease".
I have some epoxy work to do on the beams that support the sliding hatch as well as the curved beam between them. I want to do this when I replace the deck core because they'll be off anyway. I removed all 3 beams earlier to reseal them and found rot in a few places on the bottom of the beams and particularly, on both sides of the cross beam where it fits in the recessed slots of the main support beams that support the sliding hatch and deck.
This means I need several days to do the epoxy work and thus am hatchless while living on board, exposed to the elements with a tarp for protection. It has become a bit of an overwelming project while living on her. Maybe if I could find a sailing gal as a girlfriend (or wife) that I could move in with while "rehab"ing "Lost Sailor", I could finally complete these major structural projects, began sailing her and enjoying real waves and wind, and finish her as time between sailing permits! : )
But man, I'm deep into my "sailing" dream as it is. My "find a gal to share life with" dream doesn't get a fair play currently.
I think what I need is a memory card. If I could just get you to put the 9000 terabite brain card in your usb mind slot and copy your Cal knowledge for me ...
I'm not sure why I'm writing this ... except that you're still rehabing Cal 25's and I'm still trying to rehab mine. I wish to, really wish to complete these structural projects, so I can go sailing and enjoy my boat. Without getting to the point of sailing her, I'm just one of those guys that likes working on boats.
My knowledge so far is about what I've done so far. I read all I can get about my current project, practice a bit on smaller projects, and then go for it. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, not really but I try, so I like to do things right. This hampers me sometimes in completing projects as I want them to not only be structurally sound but to look nice as well. (darn painting)
I guess the bottom line is ... here I am, living on my '65 Cal 25, bottom work all done, aft deck and bulkheads out and surfaces smooth and ready for a final grinding, yet I live in her. How can I overcome this sailing dream obstacle?
I've come to the conclusion that maybe I need help, at least a "get off your ass, put your shit outside, and just do it" thing? Right now, I'm sitting hunched over on the edge of my v-berth, typing, sitting inside "Lost Sailor", my dream, trying to figure it out, the next step.
Um, finances are tight. So things like get a room for a bit are not something I can afford. And of course, at this step, marine plywood is vital.
So for a dude like me, refusing to give up, please help me figure out my next step.

Thanks for the tip, Dave. Congrats on the 34. A very substantial and neat boat. There is one 2 boats way from my CAL 25 rehab job at a yard in Deale, MD, so I've had a chance to study the 34 a bit.
Cheers

Was she already your "ex-girlfriend" or did that happen later?
Or was it a direct result of the "bottom work"?

Thanks for the concern.
All the neighbors were out tying up their boats, adding lines, setting anchors, getting small boats on trailers and collectively yelling, "No hurricanes in November!"
In recent history we have not had any later than 4 October 1995, when Opal hit us. I was not too concerned since the GOM water temp out 100 miles was 76 degrees. 78.8 or above is required to keep a hurricane going.
So, we worked our booties off for two days, then a fizzle. No more than 40 knots and that was out of the north. Monday night at high tide, I did have about 4" over my main dock. Of course, I was up most of the night shining the spotlight and checking lines, etc.
I am still wondering why I left Seal Beach???
We did drive over to the yard and check out "Submit" today. She was just setting there with a smug look on her face. I took a picture which I will send.

A group of fisherman returning with a load of fish from the last opportunity to catch Halibut during the last days of the fishing season met a fate not unlike the men in "Perfect Strom" from the aftermath of Ida.

I shiver to think about trying to go up and over that humongous wave like in the last scene of the movie "Perfect Strom". Somehow I don't think they ended like that, but I'm sure it was horrifying enough. And to think the poor fishie's died for nothing.

Well, I think she enjoyed the bottom work but the crane strained when hauling her out ... lol
Thanks y'all for the um, support. To clear things up, when I lived with her, it was in her apartment, which was what enabled me to do all the glass work on "Lost Sailor".
My home currently is not unlike a cave. Anybody here actually ever live for years on a Cal 25? And add all my tools, glass and epoxy, and projects in progress ... shoo.
I can't ever give up though, man. I do enjoy life here on the water. Just need to make my home sailable!
Damn. And I thought y'all were organizing a "build the boat" party!
