Cal 39 Table Support Pole

pw… [at] aol.com2009-11-23 20:11 UTC
I have an '80 Cal 39 with the dinette table that is bolted to the mast and to a stainless pole at the aft end. I am going to build a table that mounts on the bulkhead between the saloon and the head and would like to get rid of the pole. Does anyone know if it is needed for structural support? I seem to remember seeing some versions of the boat without it. Mine has the stbd galley and aft cabin to port. Thanks - Paul West

I have a Cal 40 with two poles that support the table. When I take the table out, I have another stainless pole that I put in there to support the cabin top. One way to tell is to see how much it gives. Mine gives too much. Paul, my CAL 40 had the poles (there were two on the boat centerline) removed by a previous owner. However, two poles with bends in them (can send pictures) were installed for deck support on either side of main cabin. I think the support is needed. I don't mean that it is right, but I've sailed to Hawaii on three different Cal-40s. None were either rated with, nor sailed with either the table or the poles. I can imagine the cabin top flexing some, but can't imagine much worse than that happening. At least with the Cal-40s. I was mostly concerned with my new paint job.
