ti… [at] ch2m.com2009-11-23 22:50 UTC
I do not know the 39. On the 40 I like the poles for two reasons, (we are rated without the table.) 1. Something to hold on to while in the sea way. 2. A place to hang/secure gear. (We have installed a line crossbar high and low) high for hanging gear and low to hold sails on the cabin sole below decks.
As for support, I would only hope that it is for crew weight. The poles are "anchored" on a fairly flexible cabin sole. So really not a lot of strength. Our cabin is arched, where most of the strength is.

Paul, my CAL 40 had the poles (there were two on the boat centerline) removed by a previous owner. However, two poles with bends in them (can send pictures) were installed for deck support on either side of main cabin. I think the support is needed.

I agree with Timm on the support factor. Our factory poles were simply in mahogany "donuts" top-and-bottom, and (so far as I can remember, not really fastened to the "donuts". Because of the weight of the table, they rested on the cabin sole, but there may have been 1/4" - 5/16" space at the top, above the poles. As such, the cabin top would have to flex at least that much before contacting (and being supported by) the post.

Fin, I was thinking of people of the approximate dimensions of Timm or myself stomping around on the cabin top. I never did have a chance to see what the original configuration looked like on my boat.
I do know that the two stainless posts that were installed off to the sides are screwed into more solid flooring and screwed into the overhead (top and bottom of posts are flanged). Hmmm, come to think of it, I have not looked too carefully to see if the screws at the bottom poke out through the hull. : - ]

Thanks for all the replies but the 39 is not a 40 and at 19,000lbs I am
hoping some of that extra weight is in the cabin top but who knows? That said,
I believe the cabin on the 39 is quite a bit wider and therefore would be
more subject to flexing and the fact that the bottom of the pole is attached
to an "L" bracket on a cross beam, not the sole, may be an indicator that it
is needed or could be there as a precaution only ie "belt and suspenders".
Thanks again - maybe I'll just leave it and cut off the brackets for the
table.

Paul,
I think your interior is the same as my boat's. It is my opinion (I am very far from an engineer) that the pole is structural. The '79's had a different table arrangement and no pole. The pole was introduced with your model year. I don't think the pole is there to hold the table up I think it is there to hold the coachroof up. For what it's worth, I wouldn't take mine out. I don't have the gutz or training to second guess the engineer/architect that decided it was a good idea to have the pole.
BTW - on my boat there is a gap of about an inch and a half between the top of the pole and the coachroof. The gap is filled with a piece of Teak (round, donut sans hole). When I replaced the traveler system a few years ago I had taken the Teak out temporarily. The deck flexed a bit when I stood on it. Was it too much flex? I really don't know. It might be unrealistic to think a deck wouldn't flex under my extreme tonnage. But, it flexed so I decided the pole was structural. I think it's the safe assumption.
Regards,
Wayne

Wayne -
Thanks for the reply. I'll probably leave it in. The only reason I was
thinking of removing it was just to avoid the hassle of cutting those tabs
for the table off. Right now I have pipe insulation taped to them to keep
from ripping my knee cap off when walking by.

Geez, Sorry, Timm!. I had read that Blog you put out about you being a 6'7" 290lb defensive lineman for Notre Dame who could bench press 620lb. I guess part of it was true.

There seemed to be some give with crew weight and Roger Jones and I
talked about doing something structurally but the pole takes care of it.

I had another pole made which is cleaner. It wasn't much of an expense

I think for $100 I can live with the scars of the brackets ;-)
