Thanks for the link. I had no idea so much legal action was going on. I
don't know if I am getting a biased view by looking at the GGYC press
releases but it sure looks like the Swiss have been playing dirty and that
is why it went to court.
As most people believe, the America's Cup has nothing to do with the kind of
sailing we do but it still is interesting to watch. I guess it is kind of
like hang gliders being interested in the space shuttle.

As far as I am concerned the America's Cup should always take place here in the states anyone wishing to compete can for that honor here. It would be nice to see them get back to the basics of sail racing.

Hang gliding and stalling, was: Re: [Cal_Boats] America's Cup

Allen, are you a hang glider? Me too. Got my Hang II back in 1981. Haven't flown much since tho. Makes sailing seem mostly sedate. It does make you appreciate the concept of angle of attack and stalling your wing (sail). In sailing, a stall condition makes you slow down, in flying, you fall out of the sky...maybe even crash burn and die. I think I'd rather just slow down a bit.

I am not a hang glider, it was just an analogy. I am way to afraid of
falling out of the sky. I do look forward to the America's Cup though.
I am also interested in the science of sailing. There are a series of great
articles on the subject in the out of print "The Best of Sail Trim"

When your wind stops while sailing, you just stop. It is only significant if you are out of gas, too far from shore, or both.
I was the investigating officer for a guy who managed to find a bit of windshear while hang gliding in Okinawa. Fell quite a ways and broke many body parts. He went alone so he spent the night on the ground in the back country of Okinawa. Somebody search on 'Habu' snakes. The island is rife with them, very aggressive, very poisonous. He was lucky and returned to duty 6 months later.
I'll take sailing any day.

Allen,
Does the deed of gift say anything about using depleted uranium for ballast, which has a greater density than lead? One Whitbred racer actually did this, but got busted and penalized for it.

My understanding is that the dead of trust doesn't say much which is why
they usually race with some agreed upon rules. It is the agreed upon rules
that say no gold. This time they could not agree on the rules because this
Swiss guy is a jerk as far as I can tell and was trying to cheat. Perhaps
that is just one more example of one of my strongly held opinions but at
least you know where I stand.

Why limit the races to only US waters? The potential for a different
venue depending on who won last seems like a worthy part of the
competition. I would prefer though, to see the Deed of Gift amended to
require that the races be held in the territorial waters of the Nation
where the defending club is located. In other words, if a Swiss club is
defending, the races should be on one of their lakes, NOT in Spain! I'd
also like to see a requirement that all crew members must be citizens of
the country of the club they sail for (being born in that country would
be better......). Otherwise, I agree with your statement about getting
back to the basics of sail racing.
The America's Cup is not named for the USA, but for the name of original
winner, the Schooner AMERICA.
