Oh, I have hanked on sails and I am guessing any J105 sail is going to have a luff tape. How hard is it to convert? I have lots of hanks on older sails that I could probably use but am unsure about the rest. I may have to remeasure my head stay. Yes they have luff tape (#6). I'm not sure about converting to hanks. Cost may be too high. I found mine at sailmaker: Hogan Sails in Alameda. I've seen a number of sails that are built with a luff tape (default design) bolt rope, and the hanks are simply added after the fact. Punch in some cringles and stick 'em on. Not that big a deal. This is fairly common in CAL 25s since we are only allowed to use hanked sails. (Old days it was a cost saving move. Nowadays, it is just tradition.) Two follow-up questions. 1) can you tell me what reasonable prices would be for a sail with some good live left? The guy I race against has a cruse lam sail (Dacron and mylar) and it is 12 years old and he uses it in high winds. It is a 155. Life like that would be great. 2) I take it that if the sail has a bolt rope in addition to the tape that I can just crimp on grommets and take some of the hanks I have and put them on. Do you recall if J105 sails have bolt ropes? Good Evening Allen, I converted a wire luff furling jib for my Cal 20 to hanks by using tools similar to the ones in the link. I used a sharp wood chisel to cut the hole, pressed in the grommet, and set the hank. Worked out well, improved pointing ability (furling attachment point was not on the bow). Chris B Would you happen to know if something like this would work? http://www.ahh. biz/products/ grommets/ tool%20for% 20grommets% 20GKS003. htm Allen _

Mike, I converted two such sails to hank on, it was inexpensive and worked out fine. I had my one of my sailmakers do it for me, too! Unfortunately one was a 155 Mylar (the original Norlam) built in 1985 and it steadily laminated over the next two seasons, getting smacked with waves and spray (the adhesive had dried out after twenty years, but I doubt that's a problem with current sails), but I kept gluing it pieces back on the Dacron scrim with spray contact cement. And...if I hadn't missed a buoy because that big beautiful sail was blocking my vision on the starboard side, I would have finally won the Corinthian Cup Regatta with that sail that year (oh drat!) I almost used that sail this year as a painter's drop cloth but I hadn't the heart to do it. Maybe it still has a few more races left in it, but, it is so covered up with patches of Dacron sail cloth repair tape (which isn't made or available anymore-the new stuff is plain mylar) it is barely recognizable as such.
