Cal Heaven and Chapter 2, a trailer

Jerry Garcia2009-12-13 15:55 UTC
Dude, whoa man. WOW! My heart is beating so hard right now. Shooooo. I'm going to have nightmares now. A huge crane with jaws will bite, crunch and lift my boat while I'm sleeping. I saved that picture ... I put it in the directory with my hurricane pics, man. I'm physically shaking. That picture is scary. I haven't even been able to actually read any of the posts. Saw the last journey and Cal 25 and looked at that pic. I mean Jaws scared me as a kid when it came out but dude, that picture, no man, noooooo. I'm massaging the insides of "Lost Sailor" to reassure her, maybe even apologizing for her to have viewed that pic by accident. I don't know where her eyes are but maybe she was resting at the moment. Man that was like when my buddy sent me a link to a beheading and I watched it. It's one of those things you wished you had never watched but now it's burned in the memory. That poor Cal, man. I'll say a prayer for it, her. May she go to Cal heaven and be with all her family ... Massaging "Lost Sailor" a bit more, a tender touch of reassurance, lol. Hey man, living on her, I depend on her as much as she does on me. Chapter 2, man. I know this isn't the room of drama and interpersonal challenges, and the sharing of chapters of life .... but leading up to my question, I must share. I've had a dream of finding an old sailboat and rebuilding her from sometime in the 90's, when I bought my first Sailing magazine. Now it's almost 2010 and I'm living on a very small vessel that I love with all man, that I have. And I'm not giving her up for anything. My dream, man. We all have dreams. "Lost Sailor" is mine. Shooo, this is a tough decision. Trying to figure it all out. A gal I dated that lived here a few months ago has invited me and "Lost Sailor" to come share life with her in Iowa or Indiana, or one of those I states. It's a lost detail as I realized I might be leaving the Keys. Chapters of life, changes, they're our adaptation to the changes in our environment and lives. We do what it takes to survive and to fulfill our dreams, the most important part, our dreams. In this world alone, your dream is your companion. So I think I'm finishing this Chapter of living in the Keys, for now, and bringing my dream north to go live with my gal. Which brings me to the question ... I need to trailer "Lost Sailor" north. I've seen Cal 25's on trailers in pics before but how do I acquire or build my own trailer? Matt Collins "Lost Sailor" 1965 Cal 25 #104 currently in Marathon

No need to get your own trailer if it's just a one-way journey. You can probably get a carrier on UShip to do it for less than it wd cost to acquire a trailer, and then you wdn't need to find someplace to store the ugly thing ;-) try: www.uship.com - look under 'Find Shipments' and use the interstate selector map to get an idea of similar jobs, how they're done and what they cost. Another aspect of this notiion of stewardship is the willingness to document the vessel and changes over time to the maximum extend possible. There is nothing I enjoy more then a well designed and organized website pertaining to a particular boat. To be honest one of the reasons a CAL as selected was this list, and the wealth of experience and documentation on the series of Lapworth designs. From one perspective I think its a major factor which has kept these boats in the forefront when considering classic plastic vessels. Best and many thanks -- /ch

Yes if they were going to make a ³Friday the 13th² movie for Cal sailors, this would be one of the scenes. Terry Spencer Dude, whoa man. WOW! My heart is beating so hard right now. Shooooo. That's a Cal? I thought it was a mock up of the Spruce Goose interior! They had it at Long Beach, a long with a mock up of the Queen Mary...amazingly life like, as I remember her alongside the Queen Elizabeth and the United States as we zoomed up the elevated highway parallel to the new watery jet runway they used to call the Hudson. Is that photo an L36? They used to build Liberty Ships in sections like that..since you can't weld or rivet planking, .just taper each edge @1 to 10, build up layers of fiberglas, and spice, and she's good as new...I think. Meanwhile, I'm in de Nile, or, de Mississippi, or....please, enough nightmares. Can't your Cal 25 be motor sailed up the Gulf Coast from Key West, in and out of the ICW, up the Mississippi River (there's that big muddy river again, just watch out for bars and snags, and tugboats pushing barges, and other side wheelers), take a left turn at the Big Mo, or the Miz Ore Uh if you don't see a battle wagon, and stop off at the landing with the sign with the town's name. Just refer to Mark Twain's books. The picture I posted was an L-36 in the process of being cut up and put in a dumpster. Very sad. The owner traded the engine and perhaps some of the other salvage material for the dumpster fee. He hauled for a bottom job and sistering some ribs but the amount of work needed exceeded his wildest dream. I think he said the deck was twisted and that was a big deal. I am skeptical as there isn't anything on Papoose you can measure that is straight, the mast is off 1 inch to the side, there is a 1 degree list to starboard, who needs straight? It is still a fast boat. Allen On Sun, Dec 13, 2009 at 2:10 PM, Gerald Sobel <so… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > > > That's a Cal? I thought it was a mock up of the Spruce Goose interior! Another happy Madoff investor trying to sell his boat in a sea of Madoff investors. These are difficult times for a lot of boat owners. some people just don't want that which isn't "perfect." Sad, but true. Allen Edwards wrote: > > > The picture I posted was an L-36 in the process of being cut up and > put in a dumpster. Very sad. It is wood and about 33 feet but the deckhouse is all aft of the mast. There is a Cal 34 next to it that looks longer to me. I don't know what it is but it is bad shape.
