Guys,
I have gotten quotes on a new #2 for my 29, and I got a good quote from North Sails Direct. The loft was in RI. Anyone have experience with them? I have decided to keep the #1, and buy a new #2. The price was $1200 and change for 6 oz dacron, max apparent 23. Does that sound okay? I got another quote very close to that also.
Thanks,
David Dobbs

David,
Is the North loft making your sail in the shop? Most new sails are being
sewn off-shore. Unless you have a local loft that can help fit the new sail
to your boat, you may have just as good a fit with these folks.
http://www.rollytasker.com/sails-page-one.asp
They were about 20% less than the Neil Pride (also sewn offshore) and I did
not have any local loft support.
With little additional cost, a local sail loft can help you get the sail
tailor-fit to your boat,.
YMMV

David,
$1,200 for a new #2 is in line with the going price these days. We paid about $2,400 for a new Cal 2-27 135 Genoa and mainsail about four years ago. Both are Dacron. Our Genoa is roller furled with a foam luff.
We had our mainsail made the same as our previous one, and that turned out to be a bad idea... rope foot and without full battens. Since then, we had it recut to be loose footed and had the two lower partial battens refitted as full battens. We get much better performance from our mainsail now than when it was originally made.
We use Supersailmakers out of Fort Lauderdale. Prior to manufacture, they came out to Magic and took numerous measurements for input to a software package they used to design the sails.
Happy Sailing & Merry Christmas,

My local sail loft is UK-Halsey, and they quoted me a boat buck more. Don't think I'm doing that.

I just got a quote for a #3 for my L-36 for $1665 plus tax and shipping.
That is a 92% blade with a 40' luff. Quantum Sails. 9 oz Dacron. That
was 15% off because of the season.

I have bought Rolly Tsker sails for the Cal 20 I had. The leech line ripped
out very quickly. I would suggest if you buy one of these sails get the
heavier fabric. Other than the rip I had to fix just a few sails into having
it it was a good sail and had a nice shape. Oh ya it was the main that
ripped.

Hi Dave,
I have been able to read, but not around enough to post.
I just bought a new number one from North. I was appraoched by a Quantum guy, but I just kept thinking where am I gonna get it repaired and how soon will I get it back. I thought the same about other makes as well. The Quanums were 200 dollars different than the North. Quantum is in San Diego and we have a North loft here in Oxnard. I tried Ullman, but they were a little more than North. Ullman has been very good to me, if you ever looked at my sails, I had a lot of patches and needle work done.
I kept a post from Fin, stating the CAL 40's have 2 sails, a #1 and a #3. The wind between the those sails was not worth the work and the extra weight. I have been thinking about that hard and looking at purchasing a new #3. My old one is sad, but works and they say most races around here will not be raced in those conditions, however, since I heard that we have done 2 races lately in winds over 25 kts.
I think keeping the #1 for those rare occasions is worth it. I use a #2 a lot on my boat when I have my girlfriend on board or just want to take it easy and not have to work getting the sail around the stays. On flat water it can make the boat move around 5.5 to 6 knots, and you are standing up instead of healed over. The wind for a #2 is 10-18 knts. I have made a bad sail choice more than once though. The #1 really helps punch thru the waves.

Just want to chime in here and share my experience with a #2 sail. My 130
is really very nice but had to be recut to get that way. The problem with
the sail at first was that it was just a little too big. By cutting back
about 2 inches from the leech, it is able to come in probably a foot more
because it just kissed the spreader before. It is really a problem when the
sail kisses the spreader because it keeps getting hung up on the spreader
which hooks the leech terribly. When it kisses the shroud, it just lies
against it, no big deal. So, my advice would be to make sure the #2 is
going to clear the spreader. That said, I have a single spreader that is as
long as the boat is wide and your boat may be different but either way I
think it is worth thinking about where the sail will be relative to the rig
and if a small change might make the sail a lot better as was the case with
mine.
On the last race I sailed, I picked my Dacron #2 and my opponent kept his
mylar tri radial #1. I had a huge advantage over him and got almost a mile
ahead by the start of the last leg. If I knew half as much about the local
current as he did I might even have won the race :-(
Quantum likes my #2 enough to put a picture of it on their web site

Fin is on the mark . On San Francisco Bay, I most often chanded to a #3 from my light 150 4oz. I carried a #2 offshore because it would balance the full mainsail when I poled up downwind, with the full reef in the #3 on th pole baanced best. A #2 has its place but it is not always a replacment for a 1 or 3. How much crew weight on the rail and what is what win dspeed I will sail in are questions you should ask yourself.

A wise old salt told me when I first got my boat that on SF Bay you only
need two sails, the biggest one you can get and the smallest one you can get
and that there will be times when you need to change from one to the other.
However, if you race, there will be times when a #2 is the right sail.
When I didn't race, I used my #3 99% of the time. The rest of the time I
used a 190. Now that I am racing, things are different. I think my friend
in LA uses his #2 almost all the time so yymv.
