Anybody read "Sailing" this month?

Chris Caswell laments about the complicated boats everyone is building these days and takes a look back at his favorite daysailor, the Cal 20. Both editorials are excellent. Bill Schanen's is about idiots using epirbs as a 911 device to get them out of situations they werern't trained for or even more ridiculous reasons. Paul

Thank you, I will read it. Blackfeather Cal 20 # 23 was raced to Kauai singlehanded. She is a very stock boat with the addition of complete lifelines(required) and a vane steering gear. Blackfeather reduced sail at nite and still reached Kauai in 19days and some hours. A lifetime accomplishment . I am now restoring COYOTE ex Caprice Cal 20 hull #61 She was sailed (upwind) from San Diego in the 1960's by 2 ex military pilots to SF Bay. Cal 20's raced from SF BaY to San Diego when the Cal Coast Race went that far back in the 80's they also raced on the ocean approaches in MORA( midget ocean racing association) Coyote was active in MORA with Bob Pavy her owner for 43 years. 4 Cal 20's are active in racing at this time on sfbay Cano'whoopass Hanna Pau Tappo Piccolo and Rambler . Coyote will make 5 when she crosses the starting line in 2010--- she was built in 1962. I sailed on Sarogate Cal 20, out of Gas Cove Dock, SF. John Foote was the owner, we did the coast, up to point Reyes etc... She would surf down the face of the big rollers, quite an experience. I also raced MORA in 1978 on the Cal 2-30 Rampage. mike farrell wrote: > > Thank you, I will read it. Blackfeather Cal 20 # 23 was raced to > Kauai singlehanded. Surfing a Cal20 is a life changing experience. When I raced to Kaneohe in the 1988 Pacific cup I was reminded when I was "allowed the Helm "on Illiamna National champ 1975 1976 Cal 20's . Ted Rust would coach me how to catch the "square waves" I sailed Moongoose Santa Cruz 70 at nite in Mexico. 20 foot Cal--- 70 foot ultralite--- ain't no really difference. I am so impressed with MORA Racers That was the real deal! If you weren't there then you will never know.
