They are great cruisers with an aft cabin with a double berth and a single that is seven feet long. THe galley and cabin are terrific. It is 22,000 pounds and probably not much of a racer anymore but they are fine boats. There is a potential issue with chain plates. THey are not attached to a bulkhead like the 40 and there is no tie rod system like the 40. They should be inspected. If it is the one from Long Beach, it is an old LA yacht Club boat that is in great shape interiorly but needs some TLC on the exterior. There is one on the Boston area that has a wet deck and should be avoided. A couple have been restored and are kind of expensive but probably worth it. The one I almost bought had been listed for $95,000 and was eventually sold for $65,000. The guy found a chainplate problem but fixed it by installing external chainplates which ruined the appearance. This one should sell for 100k or so. Maybe less. I don't know if the one in Long Beach has sold. It would probably be a better deal. Hi, Shelley - This boat and the 48 were my two favorites. We built about 16 of these. She rates 108 PHRF and is a very sea-kindly sailor, much like the Cal 40. I got to sail hull number one and was blown away at how she performed. We sea-tried the boat on a trip to Catalina before the Log Beach Boat Show. She seemed to point as well or better than the Cal 40. Downwind, she will get up and surf just like the 40 with perhaps a knot or two of extra speed. She sails off a sea very easily and really accelerates with very little rudder motion. The one on Yachtworld initially seems to be in fairly good shape for her age (37). The sea cover is missing from the companionway hatch, for some reason. Also, there look to be a lot of holes in the deck and cabin top that appear not to have been cleanly repaired or painted. That would concern me as to water ingress into the core. The photo of the primary winch seems to show a bit of stress cracking around the base. The engine is definitely due for replacement at that age if you are planning on extended cruising of the boat. The electronics are out of date and certainly would have to be upgraded for extended cruising or shorthanded racing. Rigged as this one is, she will take a crew of at least three to be comfortably sailed. Typically the boat is raced with at least five aboard. One person can handle this boat, but is it a huge amount of work, because the sails are large. Because of the hull age, my bet is that there will be some water in the laminate, possibly some blistering and that there will be water in the deck and cabin top core. These boats are starting to show their age a bit. I've seen these boats in equivalent condition go for about $65,000 on the East Coast and in Florida. Still, if she is sound, in Seattle she may sell for as much as $85,000 to $95,000 when all is said and done. The boat isn't worth $145,000 by any measure. Anyway, that's my take. \Rog Cal 29+ #1 Swiss Navy Cal 2-30 #77 St. Lori's Comet

This is the boat I nearly bought. In the last photo you can see the chain plates which ruined the appearance of the boat. http://www.sailingtexas.com/scal43a.html I don't know why it is still online. He told me another 43 had lost its rig through chainplate failure. The Gig Harbor boat has a new rig the listing says. Maybe it was the one. That boat was listed several years ago at $125k. That is a pretty good price but check the chain plates. Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96

I remember you commenting on this boat and this specific alteration in the past. could be a very appealling conversion for a cruising boat. elimimating some deck leak possibilities and the threat of corrosion failure of embeded chainplates, easier moving around on deck, reduced maintenance, etc. some of those factors convey a different beauty.
