Cal 43 Information
spencer35janine2010-01-03 03:05
I am interested in any information about the Cal 43. I have been unable to find very much information on this boat on the internet. Some very basic data is at sailboatdata.com. It is designed by Bill Lapworth and had a short production run - sounds like about 14 boats from about 1970-73. It is a very pretty early IOR design. There are three listed for sale on yachtworld.com at the moment. PHRF is 102-108. Anyone have any knowledge of its history, sailing qualities, build quality, maintenance issues, etc? Thanks for any info you can provide.

I nearly bought one and think they are fine cruising boats. They have
the aft cabin which is nice. There is an issue with the chainplates as
they do not have the beam and tie rod arrangement of the 40. They have
a great galley, too and a nice saloon. I would look hard at the chain
plates which are not that accessible. The one I almost bought had a
chain plate issue and the owner had screwed the boat up by bolting
chain plates to the outside of the hull. Had he avoided that and kept
the price lower, I might well have bought it. That boat had
circumnavigated and was in the Portland area. I actually like that
boat better than the 48 which isn't much bigger inside.

I've seen the the cal43 that's for sale in Gig Harbor. It's a nice clean boat, looks like a nice design but a couple oddities, like a stay coming down in the forward v-berth. Also one of the previous owners cut some engine access ports in the topside of the galley. The broaker told me the rig had come down and had been re-built, essentialy the entire top-sides have been re-built. Engine had a lot of hours on it. When I was looking at it I was told the seller would not budge on price, but it's now been nearly a year.... I may have gotten more interested had I wanted a 43' boat.
I was also told to not even bother looking at the one in Tacoma so I didn't even though I was at the Tacom marina one day.
