my fathers Cal40 Sloop
Beth Anna2009-12-28 18:22
Happy Holidays to you all,
I posted several months back (April/May) about the Cal40 my father gave me in his will. As a inexperienced sailor and new mother I am looking for a new owner to take on the adventure and challenge of owning a Cal40 Sloop.

My family would still be interested in moving the the sailboat from Washington to Southern California as we discussed in the spring.
Any ideas on marketing or transporting the sailboat are welcome.

I have a friend who is looking for a boat and have sent him the information.
We are in the San Francisco Bay area. There is a fleet of them here and
they raced in the Big Boat Series this year for the first time. There might
be a market here as well.
Do you know the condition of the I beam under the mast? Has it been
replaced?

Fin, do you know many Cal 39 owners in the San Pedro area?
I would like to get some additional history on my boat, if appropriate. Mine was a repo, but came here to the Chesapeake from San Pedro, the last owner from Long Beach less than two years ago.... Her two predecessors hailed from your area.
If you think you might know one or two people, I have the names of the original owners back to 1984 and can provide their names, just not on this list. Please do let me know.

Gosh Charlie, lets have a whopper of a sale! That is one fine cal....makes me love boating as the snow flies outside!
ANother PS - I am still in touch with my California friends and will be doing the Pac Cup in 2010 (for a second time, the first being in 2006) aboard Cassiopeia (an ISlander 36) skippered by Kit Wiegman. His first cross of the Pacific was aboard California Girl if I remember correctly during the Transpac prior to 2006 - dEmO?

Sale advice and sailing/flying thrills, was:Re: [Cal_Boats] my fathers Cal40 Sloop
Gerald Sobel2009-12-31 07:10 UTC
I wouldn't move a sailboat to SoCal just to sell it; there is a glut of boats for sail, er, uh, sale, here. Maybe SF is the place since there is an active racing fleet there. I'd leave the boat where it is and send it where the buyer pops up. Gorgeous! Now, if I was 3'6" instead of 6'4", my Cal 24 would be just as big! The family resemblance between the Cal 24 and the Cal 40 is amazing. Maybe Alice has some pills that will do the trick.
I've never sailed on a Cal 40..am I missing something? My crew flew in a Navy F-4B(he was a missle developement technician at China Lake), I didn't but at least I flew in a F-9F (acrobatics and dog fight) and a hang glider, but I digress. Broad reaching my Cal 24 down a long wave in a thirty knot gust, at 12.6 knots was pretty fun tho! Woooie. Someday I'd like to try my hand at kite boarding, and beach cats are a thrill (Aquacat 12 and Hobie 16). I'd love to try out that dinghy foiler, what's it called? I think there are a few here in Marina del Rey

There are 3-4 cal 40's active on SF Bay but Jerry is right. When you find the right buyer---they will come to you! I suggest an add in Latitude 38 in the "Classy Classifieds" also advertise in Craigslist. You can publish in San Diego, Orange Co, LA and SF Bay area.. BE PATIENT and get a friend of your Dad's who sailed on the boat to help you. Cal 40's are "Cult" boats and as a world class innovation when they first sailed, have a following. You can find a willing buyer, not perhaps what she would have brought $$$ in better economic conditions, but a buyer non the less!

Jerry,
You are in unique company, Neil Armstrong flew an F-9F in the Korean War and safely ejected when he caught a wire in a valley. How low can you fly these aircraft? I AM IMPRESSED. As a frustrated aviator whose experience is at the generosity of my aviator friends I see a connection --stall, angle of attack, lift and the use of a medium that is invisible and not always easy to understand. I sailed the 2004 Ensenada with a foredeck Navy officer who flew the sub patrols in an Orion. When we worked our act out, we were not spectacular, but past compentent.. I have great respect for what you do.
Happy New Year to All in the Group and to all those who are no longer able ply the Oceans of the World.. May your spinnaker be always full as you sail past the Pearly Gates.

OK, tell us about sailing Aquacats. I just read another favorable
comment in print the other day. When I was a kid, a neighbor had one.
It was pretty sturdy, but lacked sailing graces (wouldn't go to weather
or come about without severe provocation), at least as compared with our
Sunfish. We sorta snickered. The Hobie's asymmetrical hulls looked a
lot more sophisticated when they finally came out.
