Reggie, absolutely my pleasure! I was astounded by this place....most all of it, in fact. Although I am relatively new here, I would strongly suggest a visit, since you are going to be in the area anyway. Is your son at Georgetown, American, ODU (there are so many...!)
There are so many places, I am not even sure where to start. If you are looking for inexpensive, might I suggest Tilghman Island; Paul chime in anytime. Their marinas there, if you want to leave her in the water, are about $2400 per year or less...but there are several places like that between St Michaels and Tilghman... There is also Rock Hall, a little north of here....another somewhat inexpensive place as well, from what I understand from a good friend and sailor that lived there for years. I am sure that there are many more. Paul West, one of our members here, would likely suggest Cambridge...don't know that area well, but the dockage fees there are in that range. They all also have the hard, but frankly, I am not sure of any of their pricing for that, or the haul out.
I would be more than happy to help out a fellow Cal owner...and I am sure there are more here in the area that would as well..... I would also be happy to check into it when you are ready...let me know how I can help. Don't miss a visit to St Michaels via car or boat....home of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.... We love it here and would be happy to meet you to show you around our town, or perhaps for a cocktail!
I am sure there are other places, but the simple fact is, in my not so humble opinion, missing sailing this area, would be a huge mistake... Having sailed all of Florida, the majority of the the Caribbean to VZ, and across the Atlantic, twice, this has to be one of our favorite places in the world...
I do have to ask...in P'Cola which I know very well, where are the costs there that inexpensive? I lived on my San Juan 24, MANY YEARS AGO (OK in the very early 80's), in Bayou Chico when I was a Jr Officer at NAS fresh out of OCS, right before I bought my very first house out at the beach near the little red schoolhouse....and I seem to remember the costs being about that. Used to spend SOME evenings at Trader Johns...if that means anything to you... I am sure it has changed since then, as John has likely left us....he was ancient then! Pensacola is one of my favorite towns in the state....

Hi Charles.
Appreciated your comments about the Chesapeake. We've been using the excuse, for heading to the Chesapeake, that my son graduates in DC this coming May and why not sail there and then keep the boat there a while and cruise that area.
We are not fancy marina people. Sounds like the east shore would fit us better. I would be interested in any info you come across about off the beaten path places for us to visit and for off the beaten path marinas or boat storage possibilities.
We are used to annual costs for our boat in MT of about $1100. Our boat in Pensacola, a 36 footer, runs us about $2500 for the year. We don't expect to find Montana prices, but would plan to go elsewhere before spending 5-6-7-8,000 per year for a place to have a part time boat.

We are pretty well set on going. Your input is icing on the cake. Will do some preliminary research on the areas you suggest.
George Washington U.
We have used pensacola Shipyard for some haulout and dry storage. Therefore, we know Bayou Chico, aka, Redneck Riviera. We have spent most of our non-cruising water time at a private dock.
We've been enjoying the Pensacola area. there is some good cruising to be done there.

GW is a good school. Congratulations on the graduation. I know I was so proud when my kids graduated...Son from Florida State, my daughter from Northwestern...the big benefit is that they are done, and so are we!!! Leaves LOTS of time for Golf and Sailing....and of course, my work...
Have you done the sail over towards Mobile Bay? Pensacola Cut at Perdido Key, I think that was the name, and the Flora-Bama Lounge is there...I met Jimmy Buffet in that place...when he was sitting at the bar, writing Cheeseburger in Paradise... man those were the days....
I know the waters, exceptionally well, from Mobile to the Keys...brings back memories, that's for sure!

cruised from Pensacola to New Orleans and back. interesting and enjoyable trip. burger at Pirates Cove? we took the Pearl River route from the gulf to the Rigolets. seemed like sailing through eastern Montana grain fields. toured a couple of the old civil war forts. it was also our first experience traveling a canal/water highway.
We were very concerned about meeting barges until discovering it was pretty much a non-event. They throw up smaller wakes than small power boats, and are much more curteous.
Spent time in Biloxi and elsewhere.
also sailed to Tarpon springs from Destin and then returned by way of Apalachicola and the ICW from there to Pensacola.
tentatively planning to cross through Okeechobee on the trip north
See ya when we get there!

Nice memories for me....thanks. The ICW in that area, is pretty nice, both directions... The ICW from Talahassee south, has always been questionable... Barge traffic is always a safer and better bet than the normal powerboat crowd...as you found. The only places you HAVE to be careful and take more care, and gibving right of way, is on big turns in fast moving rivers...Mississippi comes to mind, but there are others. Inland waterway rules, though not a lot different, are different enough...
Appalachicola has ALWAYS been a neat place to visit, and one of my favs....THE Oyster Capital of the World...and the best in the world, though that Appalachee Bay area has taken some hits over the last decade with all the hurricanes....mucking up the beds. Jeez, there have been many, too many changes all along most all of that coast from what I remember in the 70's and early 80's...it used to be pristine....as was the Tarpon/Clearwater/St Pete area for that matter. The Panhandle was a major part of my stomping grounds during late high school and most of college....
Let us know when you get here, and thanks for the memories!

Swan Creek Marina is where Im current socked in. I cant say enough good
things about the folks here. The marina is a sailors marina, not formal and
not many on shore facilities. The setting is gorgeous and the shelter
backwater bay is inhabitted by several pairs of swans. From the dock you
look out onto the mooring field where there are some restored classics that
add to the view followed by a read marsh split by a very wide creek mouth
that the locals use to anchor out over the weekend. Rates are from the
website.
http://www.rockhallmd.com/swancreek/scabout.htm#slips
the location is about 2/3 up the eastern shore so you have the entire bay
above the bridge to explore, Baltimore is an easy day sail accross the Bay
and so is Annapolis. Between the two and on both shores there are tons of
creeks, islands and backwater areas to explore. A trip to Annapolis by sail
requires that you transit the Bay Bridge. Its huge and causeway is wide
enough for commercial vessels. Its rather impressive structure if your into
that kind of thing.
Also there are many hurricane holes on either side of the bay that you can
ditch into if the weather turns. Anchorage are mostly mud so its simple.
Hope that helps some.
I would keep my boat in the water as this year is an anomoly from what I
understand. The water turbine under my boat not a bubbler as we know them at
home (using force air) is doing a great job to keep the ice now about 4"
thick around the docks away from the boat. Haul out I think is another 400
dollars if Im not mistaken. The receptionist is Karin and she's a pleasure
to deal with.
