Hi Allen,
Would you mind posting or simply emailing some photos of your work? Also,
could you provide more details on how you made your antenna? I have never
made one but would like to give it a try.
Thank you,

I attached a picture of what I have. I don't like some aspects of it and
may redo it but it has a very low VSWR so I am happy with its performance.
The presence of the metal from the pulpit distorts the pattern which gives
the antenna gain according to the simulation. This may or may not be
desirable as it would cut the range in some directions but may increase it
significantly if you know about it and are able to point your boat to take
advantage of it when needed. In reality I don't need that much range so it
probably doesn't matter. All I need to do is be able to hear the committee
boat. If I needed help, I would use my cell phone ;-)
What I have now uses a chassis mount with some brass rod soldered into it
and bent up with the ground screwed to the chassis mount. I don't like the
fact I bent the rod as it really isn't that stable but it is nice to have
the coax lead in from the side and easy to attach to the pulpit with a hose
clamp.
I added a little bulb of tape to the top to eliminate the sharp point that
might hurt someone. That isn't in the picture but I think it important.
