I organized a get together for my old boat owners (Canadian Sailcraft)
during the Annapolis Boat Show at the Boat Yard Bar & Grill. It was pretty well
attended but so loud in there we couldn't hear ourselves think.
Since most, if not all, our Cals are "good ol boats" maybe we ought to
encourage all Cal owners to attend the show by boat, enter the regatta, and have
a raft up/party/get together afterwards.
Sound doable Charlie?

Sounds like fun. One of my fav rags, Good Old Boat...and since we all have GOB's, we fit right in!
I had tried to begin planning a raft up for all the Cal owners on the North end of the bay....but had little response. Of course, planning one for the Chesapeake, and somewhere fun, in the middle would be even better....perhaps I'm, personally, not sure where that should be. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. I thought either Annapolis somewhere for the north end, or perhaps Solomons if everyone that would want to come could make it? I am sure there are other great places, so anyone with ideas, chime on in any time.
I know it is still cold and will be for a while, but planning takes some time....and having a good date so people can plan well in advance is more advantageous as well. I am thinking late spring, or maybe early summer, so at least we may still have some wind.... Motoring to a "raft up of sailing vessels" would be kind of sacrilegious, IMHO...
Would anyone else be interested in helping out with planning? I volunteer Gina, my wife, and she is great for planning events....with some help of course.....

Charles, you might want to know about the O'Day/Cal/Ranger Owners
Association. They organize a number of rendezvous up and down the Bay.
Contact Roy Meisinger [rr… [at] rcn.com] for more information.
As for Annapolis being at the "North end of the bay". I resemble that
remark! Come on up where the Bay gets thin (and a bit muddy) and I'll show
you what the Northern Bay is all about. One nice feature is that the water
is so fresh once you reach the Sassafras that we never have nettles, even in
late August. Sweet swimming!
If something were to be planned for Wharton's, I'd do my best to attend.
It's a lovely spot, with the big cove open to the slightest breezes for a
late summer rendezvous, but plenty of shelter where you can duck in if the
weather turns sour. My wife does pottery, however, so we're busy a lot of
summer weekends, so I hesitate to offer to help organize.
And as for motoring to a sailboat rendezvous, that's about your only choice
in August.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: Chesapeake Cal Raft Up
Charles Strasburger2010-01-12 20:03 UTC
Alfred,
I'm in....the only problem is the statement "where the water gets a little thin..." and my boat draws 6'8", so I'm not sure that would work....although I am willing to try! Not sure where Wharton's is...will look it up, but it looks as though there might be, at least some interest in putting something together somewhere. Its a big bay, one of the biggest so the logistics are difficult.
I think what we may do, and I am including you and Kristen, Paul (LOL), is put together a date that seems doable, and then put out the note to the list and just see what response we get. Paul is right on about Oxford...great little town, as is St Michaels, but there are lots of great places here...the issue with Oxford, from my perspective, at least where Paul and I are concerned, is that it is a very short sail for either of us.....and perhaps long for others. We'll see later in the winter when Gina and I get to it, and send out the note to all.
