V-Drive

I have a v drive that fits a cal 34, also a slew of other stuff. Mostly off of an atomic 4. Free, just the cost of shipping. Also I'm heading to San Diego next week, and if anyone is generous to go out for a sail please give me a yell. I was very active on this list years ago, but sold all of my cals. One is in Cuba, the other Stock Island (Fl. Keys) and the other St. Pete. Thanks, Rich & Carol

Hello Gene, Long time/no see. The vee drives on our Cal 46's are much larger than the one on the 34. The large Walters' vee drive on my boat has been rebuilt twice, once when Jack Jensen was in England. The Walters units are very robust and imminently rebuildable. Walters maintains a record of each part bought from them for all of their vee drives. Most parts are readily available. Over the years I have rebuilt several vee drives of the same series as ours. They are simple and easily repaired. The only downside is on the older units like I have, circa 1967, were not pressure lubed, but depended on splash lube. Shortly after I bought Satori in 1982, I did some research and concluded the weak link was the input shaft bearing which was above the oil level, thus likely to burn out. My simple solution is to overfill the vee drive to a level above the input shaft bearing. So far, 28 years on March 17 and over 4,000 engine hours, no problem. I do lock the prop shaft when sailing as my 22 X 22 Luke prop has enough pitch that it will windmill, even when feathered.
