Re: [Cal_Boats] Mast plate
I wanted to add a deck plate to my Cal 39 but time and money didn't allow.
I have 6 mast base blocks, 2 of which were shot and of course being 30
years old I could not find blocks with the same base so that meant I had to
drill 4 new holes for each block.
I forget now how many new holes I drilled in my deck but lets see . . .
2 new winches = 12
1 replacement winch = 6
5 clutches = 10
1 deck organizer = 3
6 new mast base blocks = 24
1 mainsheet block = 4
downhaul leads = 4
downhaul turning blocks = 4
triple clutch to replace jammer = 6
Uhhmm geez that's 73 new holes and pretty much the same number were filled.
I had the same phobia (as do a lot of guys I know so you aren't alone) but
a big race was coming up and I had a deadline. Once you get past the first
2 or 3 AND you get them in the right place (very important not to f-up
early in the game). I was drilling holes in stainless backing plates too so
the pressure was doubled.
You can do it but if you can use a deck plate, I'd go that route.

Has anyone installed a mast plate at the base of the mast to accept
turning blocks for leading lines aft? I just bought a really nice one from Seals
and I'm getting ready to install it. I like the idea of not drilling holes
for every block I need at deck level, I have a childish aversion to
drilling ANY holes in my boat. Any recommendations on installation (or a good
shrink for my hole drilling issues)?
