Cal 34 cutlass bearing replacement

Greetings fellow Cal sailors – I have been reading the post in this group for couple of years now – started when my business partner was slogging through the dreaded beam replacement of his Cal 29 and made a connection here that was very helpful to his project. Very informative and welcome exchange of info most days. I am hoping one of you could lend me a little off your experienced replacing the cutlass bearing on a Cal 34 – primarily the outside bearing tube diameter and length. Mine has one of the Westerbeke conversions in it with a paragon gear and Walter v-drive turning a 1" shaft. The cutlass bearing is lodged in the deadwood/back of keel – I am assuming held in with screws through the fiberglass tube, easy enough to look at out of the water but where I live we only get a few days in the boat-yard at time (at great expense) and that is not enough time to order and fly in a new bearing after pulling it out and finding out what I have. In any case I suspect the tube dimensions are fairly standard and if one off you recall those at least that would give me a place to start. Any information you may impart in this would be appreciated. Sean S/V Tango 1975 Cal 34-2 Juneau, AK

Hi Sean, I don't know the dimensions off hand but when I replaced mine in Seward, there were two shops that had them available there. As I recall, they cut the length down but that was it. This was on a 1975 Cal2-34 back in 92. Seems like someone in Juneau should have one on hand given all the boat traffic in southeast AK. Thanks Tom - I will check around to see if anyone else local has a variety of stock to choose from (I did check in at one shop, who said they can order anythign, but so can I). Surprisigly enough I have found Seward and Homer seem to have better in-town parts resources than Juneau. Sitka as well. Not sure why - we cetaily have a large boat population here. Its $600/weekend to haul out here, so hate to not be prepared. Dont think I can put it off and squeeze a 5th year out of this bottom paint. Thanks again for the comment.
