Yesterday I arrived at the west Basin SF Marina at 0900h the wind was 4-6 k easterly. Our mid winter race was to start in about 3h so I cleaned the bottom washed the deck and helped another Cal 20 sailor with a project on Asagao # 1776 ( Morning Glory , In Japanese) By race time we had steady 12k from the ssw. Hanna Pau Cal 20 # 202 Port tacked the fleet on shore took a couple of sterns and reached the windward mark in a 3k ebb in adequate position. Sailing toward the Ft. Mason Piers yra6 the water was nearly bottle green as the flood had now come in and salty water had replaced the brackish ebb added to by the 2 great rivers run off. I had not sailed in a month-- this day was truly a gift from Posidon(sp?) After the finish and we beat three bigger ---32' 29' 23' boat for boatIn our division we were the smallest in the race I went to the GGYC with my crew and we discussed the upcoming America's Cup, Challenged by MY CLUB. Does
life really get any better than this!
My consideration goes to those who must shovel snow from their boats! My son is a 5th generation Californain so I most remain in confusion why someone would endure a winter that requires bubblers and every thing else. A sailing season of 4-6 months is something we Californians find difficult to grasp.
If you can come join us, bring your family and friends---your boat and pets too. we really have lots of space here and we welcome new arrivals.
My Best, Mike

Mike, we in Annapolis (well, some of us) sail 12 months a year except for ice-outs like right now. We learn to dress and shovel and all that kind of thing. I can't imagine a place like e.g., San Diego, it must be very dull. In the 70s every day, cute women, not much rain... that kind of stuff. Oh, well.
Cheers
Charlie

It's easier to grasp when you're sailing at 40 mph on your iceboat.

Sounds like fun Chris, We had something like that with wheels and sailed on dry lake beds, sounds like America's Cup speeds.

Same phenomenon: low friction. And because you're just inches above
the ice or lake bed, it feels like jet fighter speeds (or at least what
I imagine that would be like).

Chris,
West Marine has a cute little three wheel land yacht suitable for neck breaking speeds on the local dry lake, (as in local only 100 miles from LA) or hard pack sand on the beach.

Chris, I found this one you can use both on ice and while crossing the plains or taking a short cut to California across the Great Salt Lake:

What will the Chinese think of next?
