I have a Cal 36 hull #1 now named Rosebud hailing from San Pedro. How many were made is a good ques. I'm not sure but I think the # is less than 100. Do me a favor and give me your mast height from the cabin top. How does the boat stand up to the Bay? I grew up sailing there and miss it!

Geo our 36 is in NEWPORT beech CA not sure
how high "stick" but she has double spreaders
sail boat data does not "list" TALL RIG
however sailrite gives 3 sail plans std, cruising,
and tall rig.... Our rigger Jay Hansen thinks the 36s
are "under canvas" He crewed on a 36 that had 6
more feet to mast PHRF was lowered to 120.He
still won races... is your Rig a double spreader?
We always wanted a Cal hull #1 (we have Rodger's
boom off "Swiss Army"Cal 29 HULL #1)
We been driving back in forth to Newport ...
trying to get ready to bring her up north ...
what upgrades have you made to "ROSEBUD"
ours has ZERO upgrades except a book rack on
main cabin bulk head... edward

There is a list floating around of # of Cals built for each class. The list shows 114 +/- 36's being built. There are a handful of 36's on SF Bay. I assembled a photo album of 36's on the yahoo group site. Good Old Boat magazine did a nice article on Jim Mumper's Cal 36 in Annapolis Nov/Dec 2008 issue.
Attached are copies of original brochures and line drawing from GOB article complements of GOB.
Love to see your boat when you get it to the Bay. Were will you keep her?

Boy, was I surprised.
I looked at our Local SoCal PHRF list, and found three options. It would seem that the "I" dimension of a Standard Cal-36 is 42', a tall-rig at 45', and a "M" option at 47.7" (that's more than a foot-and-a-half taller than a stock Cal-40 rig).
I had no idea there were so many options.

Jay Butler, Butler Rigging in Berkeley and his brother Butler Rigging San Diego own and race a 36 in San Diego. They added 7 feet to the mast...quite a tall rig. He says he tromps Cal 40s with it.....

I knew a sailmaker said her spinnakers could fly in a hurricane on her
Cal-40. It doesn't surprise me that a rigger talks about how well his
custom rigged boat does ;-)
