Hi we plan to come up the coast newport beach to santa cruz on a Cal 36 with Atomic 4 with 2:1 reduction walters V drive (PYI max prop recommends a 16" 3 blade with 9 pitch ?) what was the original prop that came with the 36 was it 2 or 3 blade ? what pitch ? I'm assume it's right handed ?
what do you "guys or gals"recommend ? Would a16"
fit ? thank edward&helen

The 36's had different engine and drive configurations. You'll need to get info just from folks with the same system.
example: my 36 has a Westerbeke 4-107 with a 1:1 Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission and a 1.67:1 Walter V-drive, using a 16x8 LH 3 blade fixed or a 16x9 LH two blade folding Martec.

Cal 40 prop shaft leaks on Liz Clark's "Swell" "Trials and Tribulations"
Gerald Sobel2010-02-09 21:03 UTC
I read in this month's Latitude 38 Liz's fix for her Cal 40 under the engine leak didn't work out. Has anyone read the article, on page.hmm no page numbers? It's in the Changes in Latitude section near the back of the mag. Does anyone have any ideas. Hate to hear about a pretty young gal crying!
A photo in the article shows holes in the brass prop shaft, of course, fixing these wouldn't have fixed the problem that we've discussed, as the interior of the shaft is open to sea water any way. But the photo shows holes in the laminate around the shaft as it passes thru the keel.

I've heard that she has a leaking shaft log which is the tube that
passes through the hull with the shaft inside it. The inner end has
the packing gland. Fin Beven had a leaking tube and they were able to
tap it out and replace it. They used a rod threaded on the ends with
nuts at each end. Another tube with a diameter larger than the rod was
used as a hammer. The upper end of the rod and nut were inside at the
packing gland end.
I had mine replaced when we restored the boat.

Michael,
I wonder if She has that info? She complained about having a new person she needed to work with at the yard who didn't understand English very well. The original person retired after five years, having made enough $$ to afford a new larger cruising boat, and so he left.
But the yard assured her they would sort it out. Thing is after glassing up the old tube I doubt there's any way to 'tap it out' easily.
Meanwhile our WSA group had a terrific presentation on the Americas Cup race...and I thought I read and knew all there was to know!
Due to a confused sea state from heavy winds Tuesday they might not sail again, which would be approximately 3AM Pacific coast time. It is something like 28 miles from Valencia to where the race course is, so they don't want to even take the boats out unless they have a good chance of racing.
Jerry.

Three ways on California Girl.
1. I have the cutlass bearing knurled so it has a nice friction fit.
2. I use Loctite on the knurl for insertion lubrication and holding power
3. I tapped the shaft log and put in two opposing set screws. (and cover with fairing material)
The previous owner had no holding devices.. just after purchasing Cal Gal I was motoring down the Columbia River ship channel and the cutlass fell out, wobbling the shaft and breaking the Martec feathering propeller.
In the 5 knots of current that day, I struck and holed a 53' powerboat that did not hear the hail that I was adrift and had no control.
Since then I have had the nickname dEmO, given to me by Jacquie Mac.. for Captain Demolition.
And now you know.

Removal is fairly easy, using a sawzall and a punch chisel.

Right, I cut and remove the rubber spline lining (if it comes out), then cut and collapse the metal liner. It comes out pretty fast once it breaks loose.. just take your time to make sure you do not nick the log tube.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 40 prop shaft leaks on Liz Clark's "Swell" "Trials and Tribulations" (Mike K.)

Mike K.,
I read about Liz Clark's leaking problem shortly after she launched
last. It has been awhile and have been too busy working to remember to
follow up on what the problem really was. At the time I was led to
believe that the fiberglass at the trailing edge of the keel and above
the propshaft had split vertically and this was a known weak spot (thin)
due to its inaccessibility. I checked our boat, /Celtic Naut/, recently
on the hard, and she does have a verical split in the glass that will
need to be repaired. The picture you included shows that section is at
least 10 inches thick which would make a vertical split that goes all
the way through highly unlikely unless the layup wasn't done as
indicated. Thank you for the picture! I was ready to remove the engine,
pan and re-glass the whole area where the hull and keel come together.
If evidence of the crack goes away soon after the grinding process
starts from the exterior, I will just grind back the glass to solid and
repair it from the outside if possible. Otherwise.... ugh.
As far as removing the shaft log goes, the technique that Fin used is
similar to all of the techniques I have read about and should work fine.
I have not had to remove a shaft log yet so cannot offer any firsthand
advice.
Is this a problem we should all be aware of? I don't think it is
something to worry overmuch about but something to inspect for when
hauled out. It seems that there is precedent here for the added
inspection: Fin replaced his shaft log, you have replaced yours for some
good reason, I have a vertical split in the glass above the propshaft
(who knows how deep) and Liz had a split /and/ shaftlog issues. Hmm...
I hope Liz is able to get /Swell/ fixed and able to continue on her journey.
Mike, would it be possible for me to get a copy of the line drawings for
the Cal-40? I didn't see it in the 'files' section of our group. /Celtic
Naut /is undergoing so much rehab that those would be extremely helpful.
Thanks.

Mike K.,
I read about Liz Clark's leaking problem shortly after she launched last. It has been awhile and have been too busy working to remember to follow up on what the problem really was. At the time I was led to believe that the fiberglass at the trailing edge of the keel and above the propshaft had split vertically and this was a known weak spot (thin) due to its inaccessibility. I checked our boat, Celtic Naut, recently on the hard, and she does have a verical split in the glass that will need to be repaired. The picture you included shows that section is at least 10 inches thick which would make a vertical split that goes all the way through highly unlikely unless the layup wasn't done as indicated. Thank you for the picture! I was ready to remove the engine, pan and re-glass the whole area where the hull and keel come together. If evidence of the crack goes away soon after the grinding process starts from the exterior, I will just grind back the glass to solid and repair it from the outside if possible. Otherwise.... ugh.
As far as removing the shaft log goes, the technique that Fin used is similar to all of the techniques I have read about and should work fine. I have not had to remove a shaft log yet so cannot offer any firsthand advice.
Is this a problem we should all be aware of? I don't think it is something to worry overmuch about but something to inspect for when hauled out. It seems that there is precedent here for the added inspection: Fin replaced his shaft log, you have replaced yours for some good reason, I have a vertical split in the glass above the propshaft (who knows how deep) and Liz had a split and shaftlog issues. Hmm...
I hope Liz is able to get Swell fixed and able to continue on her journey.
Mike, would it be possible for me to get a copy of the line drawings for the Cal-40? I didn't see it in the 'files' section of our group. Celtic Naut is undergoing so much rehab that those would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

we're off soon to do some repairs and upgrades to "Submit" before the grand trip.
.re-bed several opening ports
.repair boom outhaul
.install mainsail reefing
.install dual Racor filter system (will have a perfectly good Racor 500MA turbine fuel filter/water separator with optional vacuum gauge available. Just wanted the redundancy of the dual system. If someone already has one filter installed, this one could be plumbed in to give you the dual system at way less cost.)
.inspect/lubricate/adjust wheel steering system

Did you watch the next video at the top of the page "squirrel goes nuts". A squirrel attacks a rattle snake and won't quit. Not much to do with sailing, except to see how nature is fascinating and unpredictable.
Then, there are the squireels on water skis. Who will do a video of a squirrel driving a Cal?
As a boy growing up a built a succession of sail boats, built from scratch of my own design, named after my hamster, Roscoe (remember 77 Sunset Strip?), the last being 3.5', or, 42 hamster-feet long. We took the local boat to a large lake in New Jersey that rented row boats and had a heck of a time trying to keep up with it, with Roscoe inside, of course!

Jerry,
Couldn't sleep? Me neither.
I've seen the squirrel on ski's but not the video of it chasing a
rattler. I've seen one of a rabbit chasing a rattler up a tree, though.
When I was growing up in So. Cal circa 1975, I would skateboard/bike to
the beach carrying my rat on my shoulder. Herbie was a tough
son-of-a-bitch. He was run over by all sorts of vehicles and once acted
as the ball in a pick-up game of smear-the-queer. (Not a PC sport
nowadays). Herbie was with me when I was chased away from a marina (del
Ray?) with all the pretty boats that I was genuinely interested in by
some self important security guard. He yelled at me to get away from the
dock entrance and, (I was 11 years old), that I didn't have any business
hanging around. Granted, I was a cut-off shorts wearing-long haired,
surf bum with a rat on his shoulder, but I didn't see anything wrong
with that at the time. I didn't set foot on a boat until I was 42 years
old. Weird how life may have been so different if it wasn't for that one
asshole. Makes ya' think...
Strange how the most obscure topic can still be sailing related.

Three ways on California Girl.
1. I have the cutlass bearing knurled so it has a nice friction fit.
2. I use Loctite on the knurl for insertion lubrication and holding
power
3. I tapped the shaft log and put in two opposing set screws. (and
cover with fairing material)
The previous owner had no holding devices.. just after
purchasing Cal Gal I was motoring down the Columbia River ship channel and
the cutlass fell out, wobbling the shaft and breaking the Martec feathering propeller.
In the 5 knots of current that day, I struck and holed a 53’
powerboat that did not hear the hail that I was adrift and had no control.
Since then I have had the nickname dEmO, given to me by Jacquie
Mac.. for Captain Demolition.
And now you know.
dEmO
Removal is fairly easy, using a sawzall and a punch chisel.

I had mine replaced when we restored the boat.

Re: [Cal_Boats] shaft log/cutlass bearing
John Courter2010-02-12 09:20 UTC
The drawing confuses me a little. The set screws which on my boat and my friends Cal 34 come in from both sides of the keel. If the drawing is correct and the monel machine screws are at 90 degrees to the set screws, then they are vertical and buried in the keel. From descriptions I've read the old shaft log can be driven out. If the screws remained in the shaft log that would have made a mess coming out. If they're in line with the set screws, they were long ago glassed over on the Cal 34, and could have been not installed when the shaft log had been replaced on my boat. ( I wish the previous owner had read about the technique here of the hammer slide made with a bolt, he cut the log out of the keel and had pros glass a new one in.)
Two years ago the cutlass bearing slid up the shaft log and brought the engine to a halt. No damage other than to the cutlass bearing. It slid right out with no pounding when the time came to remove it. We machined small flats where the set screws go on the cutlass bearing. The new cutlass was loose in the shaft log as well. Shimmed in the cutlass bearing with some brass shim stock. (The Cal 34 is loose as well, the owner has been using shim stock on his for 25 years.) The cutlass bearing came with shorter set screws, 4 of them half the length of the ones (two one for each side) originally in there, so there was room to put a backing (locking) set screw behind the one riding on the cutlass bearing on each side, they also came pre-gooped with some sort of lock-tite.
I'm pretty sure that the bearing wasn't shimmed in so tightly that I won't be able to use the tool that was on the Cal 34 when my friend got it. It's a U shaped rod with the tips bent out. You compress the U to slide the tips up past the cutlass, the tips snap out and you pull on the bottom of the U to remove the cutlass.
You can see the skid marks of the set screws spiraling to the end of the cutlass bearing as it spun and slid up the shaft. I don't that's going to happen with the flats in there.

I bet your Cal C-36 has something similar to what is on this drawing (for a Cal-40).

Extra Stuff Trimmed
Speaking of Oregonians, my weather map says it's been right breezy out that way. Also, there is a Low over the Gulf of Mexico (making a rain/snow pattern in the South) that looks like the last couple of storms that nailed our butts here in humble Annapolis.
Cheers
