FW: [Cal_Boats] Main saloon ceiling
I needed some repair work done. some of the starboard aft coachroof had delaminated due to water intrusion from handrails. Mike from Blue Water Bound did the work on the repair and installed my new stainless handrails (see attached). He used West systems 407 filler over glass after cutting out and replacing rotted plywood core section, blended/faired with remaining glass laminate covering with a judicious sanding and painted with Awl-grip primer and G007(?) Snow White paint to match what was previously used. He also over drilled the mounting holes for the handrails, epoxy filled them and redrilled, to prevent future water intrusion. It was nice to have the job done right.

Excellent looking job. I too have removed the vinyl overhead because the system that was holding it up was failing and I couldn't find replacement parts. I have decided not to replace the headliner precisily because the old one was hiding issues I wish I had caught earlier, and would have had they not been masked. Paint is the answer and your job looks great. I was thinking of using a two-part urethane ala Interlux Perfection. What type of paint did you use?
Also, how did you fair the overhead? I assume they left it pretty rough since it was being covered by a liner. It looks like you did a tremendous job of getting it perfectly smooth.

Wayne

some love it some hate it. we like it. smooth clean ceiling. see attached. mounting hardware is visible to see problems, and can be dressed up with acorn nuts or sex nuts. brightens interior. can be muted by choice of curtains, trim, tinting of paint, etc.

I have a sagging, stained, tired vinyl ceiling cover in the main saloon of my 34. I'm considering options. Wood. Formica. Vinyl. and....paint. I had the same issue with the underside of the companionway hatch. Sagging, ugly vinyl. I sanded a bit, used some good epoxy paint, added some teak trim and a teak handle. It came out very nice. No sweating. No apparent increase in cold in the boat.
It appears the coach roof is also thick enough balsa core to avoid sweating. Has anyone here painted theirs as an option to replacing vinyl? If so, what was the outcome.
Cheers,
Danny
