I thought some of you might enjoy this. These are my notes for the meeting of the SoCal Cal-40 class early last month.

We had a very successful SoCal Cal-40 class meeting at Long Beach Yacht Club on February 4th, arranged by Cindy (Comyns) Buffa. As many of you know, Cindy's dad, Lou Comyns, had hosted our meeting as LBYC for many years. It was nice to have that tradition continue.
At 19 for dinner, we had the best attendance of any meeting I can remember. Sorely missed was our Grand Leader, Jim Eddy, but the following attended and had a great time:
Dave Tingler, Vivant, #99
Joe Nelson and a friend who's name I have forgotten, Chinook, #15
Cindy and Jack Buffa, Ahsante, #27
Bob, Beya, and Julie Schaeffer, Melee, #10
Steve Calhoun, Psyche, #3
Odin Braathen, Pegasus, #22
Mike Kennedy, Conquest, #97
Lloyd Sellinger, Bubala, #141
Matt Campbell, Dani Girl, #131
Jerry Finnegan, Celebrity, #100
Alex Yakutis, #125, Leilani
Matt and Nichole Paskerian, Classic Cal, #38
(me) Fin Beven, Radiant, #24
and last-but-not-least, our new Class Champion:
David Reed, No Parley, #73.
Among the highlights.
We gathered in the LBYC bar, with people arriving between 6 and 6:45.
The club served us a wonderful dinner in a small up-stairs dining room.
We congratulated David Reed on his win of the year's High Point Championship, won with his convincing race from Newport to San Diego.
The prior weekend, LAYC had just completed it's Opening Day Race (first on our 2010 schedule). 1st: Radiant; 2nd: Callisto; 3rd: No Parley.
Various construction-related details were discussed. There was a brief discussion of in-board genoa tracks. In the "old days", when all of our fleet sailing was done as a class, these were not permitted. Approximately 10 years ago we went to our "High Point" system, and effectively approved any sails or rigs that PHRF would permit. Even so, most of our fleet has not experimented with this. Sinn Fein on the east coast has now won the Bermuda Race twice, and has used inboard tracks. Several of the Cal-40s that sailed in Big Boat Series at StFYC used inboard tracks. They reported mixed results, with no clear determination as to whether or when the inboard tracks would be better. My guess would be that they could offer some advantage in lighter breezes. Inboard tracks are the only way to go with a #3, and that #3 can be very effective in 15 kts. TWS or greater, as well as being very easy (and quick) to tack. Many of the SoCal boats have removed the forward lowers, which makes this inboard sheeting practical.
Odin Braathen has become our Link-to-the-Past. He seems to be the only one in our fleet who really knows what was going on at Jensen Marine when our boats were built. Odin is in an on-going re-build process with Pegasus, and still owns his Cal-34.
We then got to schedules. Our schedule is based on the following parameters:
1. Offering races that cover our SoCal geographic area, Santa Barbara to San Diego
2. Races in which our fleet is likely to participate.
3. Races that offer us an opportunity to "show off" what we've got, and that it is still very competitive.
For 2010, the schedule is not completely set, but it is taking shape.
1. (As mentioned above) LAYC Opening Day (this was held on January 30)
2. The Border Run. April 24-25. http://www.theborderrun.org/<http://www.theborderrun.org/> This is a big change, as it replaces the Ensenada Race. This change has occurred based on the turn-out this race produced last year. To my way of thinking, it should be a good race with a clever concept. It's a good distance, no issues with Tijuana, no issues with clearing Customs back into the country, delivery home time cut in half, and (maybe best of all) you get to San Diego when lots of the boats from San Diego are still at sea, headed to Ensenada.
3. Newport Harbor YC Opening Day Race. May 1. This is one of the most pleasant races ever. It starts at LAYC's starting area in LA harbor. It's a short (1.5 mile) upwind leg to the LA opening, and then a 16 mile spinnaker reach to the finish at Newport Beach.
4. Long Beach Yacht Club, the race to Ship Rock, June 19. Another great sail, and a great race. Our member Jim Brock has been very successful in this race with his Magic II.
5. Santa Barbara to King Harbor. We haven't had much in the way of Cal-40 entries in this for the past 2 years, but if the wind holds, this can also be a fun sail, and offers an opportunity for the southern boats to do some good cruising in the Channel Islands on the way to the start. From what I've learned, the basic tactic is to sail a bit low on the course out to the west end of Anacapa Island, stay close to Anacapa as you head back to shore, aim at Pt. Dume, and then gybe when you get close to shore, then head for the finish at King Harbor.
6. LAYC, Harbor Series Race, October 23rd.
There were other discussions, of other possible races. If any of you remember or could offer more details, please let me know. I do remember that Cindy Comyns suggested a race from Emerald Cove (Catalina Island), up to the West End and back. I believe it's scheduled for some time in the summer, and it's sponsored by Corsair Yacht Club. I hope Cindy will get us the details on this. Sounds like fun to me.
And Joe Nelson has a special request. If you have a good picture of your boat, any good picture, send it to him. Jo… [at] Cox.net<mailto:Jo… [at] Cox.net>. We have Joe to thank for all of the improvements in our Web-Site (Cal40.com) and he has plans to make it even better. I'm going to find a good picture of Radiant but will also send Joe this picture I took of Callisto two years ago. How about that for a "tight reach". Fight On !!
