Loran Antenna -Throw away?
imissedmyface2010-03-11 17:02
Believe it or not, I was still using my 30 year old Sipex Loran until last month when they shut the system down (I can't throw away functioning nav aids. Still have sextant and RDF!). Anyway before I remove and toss the Loran antenna, I was wondering if it has any other uses such as a back up for VHF radio or could it be used as a UHF antenna for the new digital broadcast TV signals.
I checked the web and it looks like some Ham folks are shortening and using them. Thanks.

Might be a toughie. Loran was at 100Khz. VHF is at 100Mhz. UHF starting at 300Mhz. This would be a truly broadband antenna.
Cheers

I bet it would work great for AM radio. I put mine in the garage as I can't
throw anything away. My kids will have to do that after I am no longer
around. I don't know what the antenna was electrically but I can tell you
it was not a 1/4 wave at 100khz. It might be good on some HF HAM band with
minor modifications as there are bands where the physical length seems about
right.

My father used to say that -- "my kids will have to do that after I am no longer around!" Last May I filled a 40 cubic yard dumpster 3/4 full with the flotsam and jetsam of his life as he moved into assisted living. I found bomb shelter food purchased in 1961 still in the un-opened case and DDT that was especially hard to dispose of! There were games that I played with when I was 6 years old still on the basement shelves. Do your kids a favor and clean house now! They will love you for it.
The spark that brings this to mind is the CB radio and roof top magnetic antennae that was still down in the basement. Totally useless, but still neatly saved in a plastic bag to keep it handy "just in case" they ever became a fad again. I simply took my Loran out and replaced it with a GPS and glassed over the hole in the stern where the Loran antennae wire exited the boat to run up the stern rail. Loran is used up and gone -- time to get rid of it!

They will earn their inheritance. I just got to thinking what is in these
boxes and opened one special one. It has bibles in it. One is from 1874
belonged to my grandfathers grandfather, a sea captain (sailing content).

my ex-step-grandfather once told me "save it for 7 years and you'll find a use for it".
usually a use is found for it shortly after discarding it.

Wow! There are a lot of people who'd BUY that DDT!! As for CB's, well,
as a driver I can tell you they are going away. Cell phones and
satellite radio are killing them--still, useful in a backup or something
to find out what's going on and such.
