Michigan Wheel says I should have a 16x8 3 blade prop. I have a 16x10. seems I heard a good prop shop could make thatmuch of a change to a prop. is that true? anyone know what that would translate into for a 2 blade folding? Reggie

Reggie, I talked to the prop shop guy next to the NAPA store here in Pensacola and he quoted me between $70 - $90 to re-pitch 2 inches. The price differential is between plain bronze and another bronze-like metal that he says is like banging springs. /Celtic Naut/ has a 16x16 wheel and, yes, she's very over pitched. 6kts at idle sounds great, but if your motor loads up and doesn't reach optimum rpm, that's not good. It also means I am jockeying with the gear shifter to keep her slow in docking conditions. Since you and I basically have the same motor, I bet the 16x8 is about the right size for me as well. I displace about 14,000. What is /Gypsy Gael'/s displacement? Mike r good wrote: > > Michigan Wheel says I should have a 16x8 3 blade prop. Hi Reggie, I have heard that 2" is the max pitch change, so you are in. Do you want me to have Josh pull your prop and take it to Accu-Prop? I had a 2 blade folding on my Col 36. It took a lot of getting accustomed to, like entering a slip you start backing down real soon at high RPM's. Pounding into head seas was tough, but usually big seas are caused by wind, so you sail. I have a Luke 3 blade feathering prop on Satori, our Cal Cruising 46. In light airs, when I feather it I pick up 1/2 knot. We stopped by to check out the paint job on Bravura, our Cal 25 last Friday. He has done a wonderful job on fairing, filling and priming. She should get the final coats this week, so we can get her home and re-rigged for the Dauphin Island Race on Mobile Bay April 26. My other boat, an old-timer and early fiberglass vessel from 1961, needs to be painted again. I got a quote from the yard's paint shop, which does good work, and it was $8,000 for a 26 foot boat. The old paint job looks a lot more attractive after an estimate like that. I've been meaning to ask the guy if he included the deck and cabin trunk, which I did not intend, or if it was really $8,000 for just the hull. If my income had gone up in the last 6 years, I'd be less parsimonious, but it hasn't. Chris Campbell

I'm thinking of going to the folding prop. I wouldn't have to wory about the prop spinning any more, either. I've had a Martec folding prop on "Knot Ready" since day one and like it. I have a Martec 16x10 folding in the lazarette on the boat. What I'm thinking about is this: have the Martec folding prop checked out and then having it installed and let Accu-Prop repitch the three blade and carry it for a spare. What do you think? Should Accu-Prop check out the Martec or should it be sent back to Martec to be "refurbished"? I'm still not sure if 16x9 on a two blade fixed prop means that the Martec should be repitched from 16x10 to 16x9. Would Accu-Porp know? Could they repitch the Martec? How do I reach them? took your advice and called them. Nice folks. the two blade folding came in an original, also referred to as Mark 1. then there was a Mark 2 and a Mark 3. They said if it was a Mark 3, going up 1" from a 16x9 fixed to a 16x10 Mark 3 would be fine. If it is a Mark 2, they are apparently more agressive in design and there should be no increase in pitch when going from fixed to folding. I guess a Mark 1 is somewhere in between the Mark 2 and Mark 3. So, now i need to find out which version is hidden in my boat! Thanks Charlie, Bobbie is perfect for an old broad! She gets her new Pontiac Solstice today, a reward for 26 years of putting up with me. She had roadsters for years, then when we starting cruising we sold them. She wanted a 1964 Jaguar XKE, but I have had enough grief in my life, MGTD & Triumph TR3A. So we now have all American cars, from our 1930 Ford to her 2008 Solstice Bravura is going to have the same color scheme she had white with a blue stripe. The blue stripe is Navy Blue the same as our other boats. She is still with the painter over in Alabama. He called me yesterday saying it was the best paint job he has ever done and he has been painting airplanes, cars and boats for years. I'll post a photo as soon as I go get her. Hi Chris, This was a kumshaw job. I gave him my storm damaged Cal 20 and it's trailer, plus a bunch of parts I had salvaged from other storm boats. I provided all of the paint and supplies. I prefer Sterling paint, so my supplies are over $500, at wholesale prices. It is a very labor intensive undertaking, plus having a covered, protected area to spray and waiting for proper temperature, etc. If I had to pay full price for this paint job, I would say $5,000 - $8,000. Unfortunately a Cal 25's market value is less than that, but we LOVE our Cal 25. I am looking forward to having her back in the water and racing the Dauphin Island Race April 26. However, my biggest thrill will be seeing my granddaughters race her July 26 in the all female, Navy YC Bikini Regatta, then the following Saturday they will race her in the all female, Race for the Roses, Pensacola Beach YC. I have told them this will be the greatest birthday present I will ever receive. Hi Gene, We have a 3-1 reduction and use a Luke three blade feathering prop, 22 X 22. With a clean bottom, fair seas and loaded 400 gallons of diesel fuel and 200 gallons of water, plus a six pak of Sam Adams, we cruise at 6.2 knots at 1550 RPM's on our Perkins 4-236, average 1.1 gallons an hour. Hi Reggie, I would send the Mar Tec back to them. They are good people. As far as the proper pitch, have you checked into www.michiganwheel.com for their prop program? You send all of the info requested and they sort it out and send you a suggested size and pitch. I always carry a spare prop, prop puller and hookah when cruising. I picked up a piece of chain in Costa Rica damaging the Luke, so I pulled it out by Isla Gitana, took it into town and had it repaired. After my diving, the locals told me about the crocodiles. Unfortunately a Cal 25's market > value is less than that, but we LOVE our Cal 25. > Thanks for the price range, Tom. My boat, with a compromised gelcoat, probably needs lots of prep work so maybe my price estimate was in a reasonable range. And "market value" has no relation whatsoever to the boat's inherent value. No economist would ever approve the rationality of boat ownership. It's way beyond rational calculation. I've sailed the boat that needs the paint job since 1969 and have done all the maintenance. I'm now in the annual spring prep-and-varnish ritual, one of those black holes for time and effort that is rewarded on launch day when she draws oohs and aahhs. And my Cal 20, the boat I bought as just a temporary vessel, well, I fell in love, too. She's a keeper. You're lucky to have the grandkids out sailing. I've got one niece who caught the bug, out on Lake Champlain, but the others all tend toward the computer games and indoor activities. Maybe they'll grow out of that.... Chris Campbell

Isn't diving anywhaere to pull a propeller a Croc? Michigan wheel was my source for the recommendation of 16x8 3 blade or 16x9 2 blade. I remembered you mentioning them and sent them my info. Thanks. I believe the Martec is in the starboard lazarrette, in a black plastic milk crate. I would be happy to retain Josh or anyone else to collect it and send it off to Martec on my behalf.
