prop suggestions?
John Caldwell2010-03-12 00:17
I'm replacing the old (and long gone) Farymann in my 2-29 with a 15hp Yanmar.
If memory seves, the prop is a left-hand 12x12. Does anyone know if the Farymann is left-hand or right?
If I have to change props, any suggestions for a fixed-blade?
Thanks,
John

Hi John -
Whet Yanmar engine model [ not just the hp ] are we discussing?
What is the reduction gear ratio?
What is your boat's waterline length?
What is the largest diameter prop you can fit on your boat?

John,
Assuming you will wind up changing props, I'd, and I did, go see my
local Michigan dealer and get his advise on a 2 blade "Sailor." I
have been pleased with the performance and relative lack of drag over
the past 10 years. I'd allso listen to Joe DeMers' advice, as I'm
convinced the spec'ing the correct size is probably most important
part of the process.

My suggestion is if you are considering a fixed prop, also consider your
usage or cruising habits. If you motor, more than sail, or where you want
to go is "into the wind" consider a three blade prop. The cost difference
is minimal, but getting to where you want to be may be the driving factor on
your decision.
If you sail or race, save up!
YMMV

Hi Joe,
It's a Yanmar 2GM 14hp. The prop behind the Farymann is the 12x12 RH 2-blade, so rotation is the same as the Farymann.
I'm not sure the transmission just yet. I'll give the 12x12 a shot and see how that works out before switching out.
Best,
John
