Interior paint recommendations?
Ash2010-03-24 21:07
I'm not sure what my cabin has been painted with previously... probably a white epoxy based paint from West Marine. It's time for repainting and I'm wondering if maybe some household latex paint would be adequate for the interior cabin. Thoughts?

I use a high solids white primer mixed with a Bahama cream topsides paint (Interlux, West Marine) I really like the way it turns out.

what are you painting, the wood under all the cushions or? We only paint the painted wood: wash with tsp substitute, sand with 100 and 150, then use a primer that is good for all paints and then either easypoxy or rustoleum. both hold up really well in the environment. We also did this in the bilge of a trawler in 2005 and it is still crisp and clean and wipes up easily. In the sailboat it helps keep any moisture from soaking into surfaces if you get splashed.

The boat refurbisher we are currently using suggested Rustoleum Flat White in our boat and I have been impressed by it's looks and durability. (and the price at $29 per gallon was nice too).

Ash, this is real opinion and taste stuff. On my CAL 25s, I use exterior latex house paint (anti-mildew stuff) in off-whites. I prefer dull or matte finish since I don't like the gloss appearance inside the boat. Seems to last a long time. If I've replaced a beam or overhead, I put a coat of glas cloth on it instead of painting. Gives a very nice wood grain look. Guess I'm kind of rustic.
Cheers
Charlie

When I paint, I like to do it carefully and well so it looks a good and
lasts for a very long time. My Cal 20 had badly flaking interior
finish, whatever that stuff Cal used was. When it lost adhesion, it
flaked off. Where it didn't, almost nothing would budge it. @$#**%!!!!.
When I finally got it all off, I repainted with Pettit's special
interior paint, Dura-White. I took a flake of the old paint to my local
Ace Hardware and they tinted the Dura-White to match the cream-colored
original finish.
The Dura-White is designed as a boat interior paint and has some sort of
anti-mildew component. It's washable. It is a satin finish--between
dull and glossy. It's also advertised as being usable over any clean
surface--dull, glossy, whatever. My own opinion is that good prep work
is always helpful, and that includes de-glossing. I've been happy with
my painted interior, except for the spiders that keep leaving droppings.
Exterior latex paint is said to be good for boat interiors. I'd be
inclined toward a glossier version, not flat. Buy expensive
versions---good acrylic latex. Some latex paints had a problem with
"blocking"--things would stick to them when the object sat on the
painted surface for a while. Better paints don't do this now, I have read.
