Cal 46 Hull number guess
ti… [at] ch2m.com2010-03-30 16:02 UTC
Any guess as to the hull number? I'm fairly certain it is the original CC46 (mark 1) which would make her less than Hull #18?

Just a guess. But as the fed registration number is provided, that database
should be searchable and the hull no would be part of the registration
process. Where and how, no clue. But its a long shot.
Best of luck.

I want one... I like the older layout for some reasons... the Mark 2 is okay and are generally better prepared... just a bit of dreaming really, as I have not sold the Cal 40 nor the Cal 9.2 yet.... The Cal 20 left last weekend.

I could EASILY see living aboard and cruising one. Made the mistake of taking wife Diane aboard one last year at RYC.

Doesn't Tom have a CC46? Hull number 1? Maybe his manufacture date and
yours reference the Cal models mfg from an earlier e-mail.
Hhhhmmm, there were only 18 made from 67 to 72, this may be one of the last
models made!

Hi Cal Pals,
Yes, I am lucky enough to have Satori, hull #3, which I bought from Jack Jensen's estate in 1982. We have lived aboard 18 of the last 22 years and would still live aboard except for some "physical challenges".
I vaguely remember Rendevouz from years past and will look her up in some hard copy files I have on board. March 17, St. Patricks Day was our 28th anniversary of owning Satori. We have never met a boat that could in any way equal her, given our circumstances.
Tomorrow, I will look up our old records from the Cal 46 Association, all hard copy, and will list who owned what number in our last year of publication - about 1990. Our neighbor and cruising friend since 1988 bought CC 46 Jack 'A Hearts, hull #___? in 2001 and kept her just down the bayou at his dock until last year when he had her trucked to Seattle, as he still works in Valdez, Alaska as a tugboat Captain for Crowley.
More manana,
Tom Vandiver

Still learning how to sail was: Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 46 Hull number guess
Gerald Sobel2010-03-31 08:55 UTC
Tom,
It was a great pleasure to meet you at Fin Bavin's house a few years ago (more than a few?) Also it was fun, one CCCCC a few years back (ok a few plus a few?) to have the Cal 46 Club join us doing the CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC at Howland's Landing at Catalina.
We had a wonderful Tuesday night race tonight, our third, with good winds, and I discovered I am still learning how to sail, because I learned to do a few things that have been causing me grief in the past.
1. How to slow the boat down and loiter, head to wind, to windward of the starting line. The secret is to feather the jib, since as the boat slows down, wind catching the jib will over power the rudder and either turn the bow down, or back wind the jib, putting you in irons, or worse, flipping the boat over to the opposite tack.
2. The importance of accelerating the boat out of a tack vs. keeping it pointed up wind coming out of the tack. If you don't get the boat down a bit, and maybe ease the sheets, it can take forever and a day to pick up speed, afterwhich, you can then point higher WITH speed.
3. Cutting the jib sheet at the exact right time when you tack, and getting your crew to pull the sheet around rapidly. Cutting too soon means you can get the clew wrapped around the leeward shroud as you try to come about, plus the bow comes around slower. Cut to late and you turn to far and your sails end up being stalled, plus the crew has a harder time pulling in the jib sheets once the jib has filled with air. And all this depends on the wind strength: higher winds will pop the jib around a lot faster.
4. Tacking up channel under main alone: Again, falling off a bit, with both heading and sheets, and picking up some speed before heading higher means the boat will accelerate, giving the rudder control authority, and preventing you from getting in irons and out of control. When the boat gets real slow, the wind will catch the sails and take it where ever it wants to, and that could be very nasty when you are docking under sail in close quarters to docked boats.
The off shoot of what I learned tonight allowed me to overtake and pass two boats that had gotten by me pointing higher (they have efficient fin keels vs. my long low aspect semi-full keel), as we tacked up the main channel. They came out of the North Entrance around the break water and tacked over towards the first Olympic buoy, which we had to round before re-entering the South Entrance, but they tacked sooner and were pinching up in slowing, dying wind and steep waves left over from a strong afternoon breeze (small craft warnings had been out) which was slow, whereas I tacked later and then sailed over them, keeping good sail trim and good boat speed. It was satisfying to figure out solutions to a few things that had been bothering me for a long time. I hope I can remember what I've learned.
Jerry
