2-27 questions

Hey all: Couple of questions. Considering buying a 2-27. The outboard gas tank is in a seat locker, which opens up to the inside space under the cockpit and fore of the companionway. This boat has the standard dryer-hose vent system for clearing out this space. Has anyone ever had any problems smelling gas fumes from this arrangement? Also, I'm a bit concerned about the electrical system sparking and starting a fire/explosion. Any ideas about this? Any other comments about what to look for. I'm having the boat surveyed, and it's being sold by a good friend who is honest. Thanks in advance, Carlos And by the way, to add to a recent discussion, I'm a semi-pro Irish musician who also does old-time and Klezmer music. Slainte.

Carlos, I can't speak for the gas tank situation, as our boat is diesel powered. But, I will chime in to say that our Cal 2-27 is a great boat. We cruise and race her. We have taken Magic to the Bahamas and have another trip planned this summer for Regatta time in Abaco. We have done well racing in moderate winds & seas, but I have to give our crew the accolades for that. Back to the fumes... I think there is some venting going on there, else you have a very small fuel leak. You may want to consider replacing all of the fuel lines and pressure test the tank. I'm sure other listees here will have other suggestions and recommendations. --Michael-- s/v Magic, Cal 2-27 Pompano Beach, FL From: calden <ca… [at] msn.com> To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Fri, April 2, 2010 2:41:40 PM Subject: [Cal_Boats] 2-27 questions Hey all: Couple of questions. Carlos: I sailed a 2-27 for twenty-three years before getting my current boat. I put on a l5-horsepower Johnson, but didn't like the idea of the 6-gallon gas tank rattling around the bottom of the boat. To fix the problem, I glassed in a wooden shelf in just under the port cockpit hatch. It was easy to do since the inside finish on the hull was pretty rough. I ran the gas and electrical cables through one of the two Nicro Fico vents on top of the transom. That gave me a short gas line to the motor, and made it easy to lift out the gas tank when filling up.
