Southern straits race 2010

A video of this year's Southern Strait race. Nice sailing!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13bo7-pUQ5w
Here's an unbelievable video from Astral Plane, a J109.
One boat sank, 6 crew barely rescued. Two dismastings, innumerable
busted sails, and from the bar we saw two guys carried off boats on
stretchers.
A sobering weekend for all involved...

A few observations, Folks.
I did not see a preventer of any sort on the main, and that fellow was standing there.
That was a real big crew.
Must have been quite a ride. I've done 50+ a number (not large) of times, once in my CAL 25. Time to take the pants to the laundry.
Cheers
Charlie

I did the Southern Straits Race back in the '80's in Talina, Swan 65 hull16. At the time, my biggest concern was sailing at nite in shallow, inshore waters. I did main trim and we had good local knowledge aboard so tactics and navigation were in other hands. That said , at times it was disorienting for me to be going fast(for a displacment 74 thousand pound boat) On A moonless night, surrounded by land that I could not define clearly. It is not an ocean race and not having the ability to run off before danger is a definate handicap. Abandon the race and seek some form of protection before that option is taken away from you. We won our class, by the way!

But wow, doesn't the video make it look like fun (on somebody else's
boat)! I've only been in seas like that on a schooner that never, ever
goes 16 knots in any direction. This looks like a better way to do
it. And they're lucky they weren't beating.

My first night watch as a mate on our schooner was in similar
circumstances--we were sailing in a narrow channel between two islands
in waters I did not know well. The boat was in my hands and I was
supposed to know what I was doing. I became best friends with our radar
and the old, non-plotting GPS. Thy images and numbers, they comfort me.

Thanks for posting--vicarious thrills for those of us whose boats aren't
even in the water yet and are sitting in an office anyway. I need more
rich friends so i can sail on other people's fancy go-fast boats.
