Again!? This is #5 in 2 years, isn't it? We've got to find a different
pump manufacturer for you. This is ridiculous!

What about using an exterior, electric pump? They use such things for motors, don't they?
Then you can use any pump you wish. Good revenge, I'd say! Just don't run out of juice, or have a solar or wind or both chargers. Heh heh. Damn the torpedos! Hmm. How can a pump possibly break down after 72 hours? Is it made out of sturdy laminated chicken fat?

Reggie,
If I remember correctly, on your Westerbeke branded Perkins 4-107, you
have a Sherwood pump from Depco. (It may be a Johnson but I'm not
sure...) With a little searching, I have found two replacements: A
762-G-65 P PUMP SEAWAT(PERKIN4108)3/4
<http://inetmarine.com/ProductImages/she/G65.jpg>SHEG65 which is a
Sherwood pump and a Jabsco #JAB 3270-000. The Jabsco is available at
Boatbandit.com
<http://www.boatbandit.com/jabsco-self-priming-engine-cooling-pump-5600.aspx>
for $330. The Sherwood is available at Inetmarine.com
<http://inetmarine.com/762-g-65ppumpseawatperkin410834sheg65.aspx> for
$413.69. Depco will be high dollar, but should warranty the pump. Maybe
Mr. DeMers has better sources than I can scare up... Joe? Do you know if
there is an Oberdorfer pump that he can use? (I've seen Oberdorfers, but
never saw one leaking so never had to fix one.)

Excellent suggestion Jerry. Outside the box. have to figure out volume of the old pump to chose an adequate substitute.

Thanks, Randy.
we spent yesterday afternoon preparing the dinghy for its initial launch. We're planning to dinghy to downtown Stuart this morning to do a little shopping, etc. Not sure yet how we'll get the new pump tomorrow, assuming it arrives.

Re: [Cal_Boats] breakdown & Pump life?

$600 for a raw water pump for a Perkins? Dayum Reggie, I would have driven to Stuart with a new pump and changed it for that!
Something is wrong somewhere, besides the pump. The raw water pump on my Perkins 4-236, (same type, gear driven) has 3,600 hours on it and is a 1987 model. I have only changed the impeller as needed. Other 4-107/8's I have serviced pumps have lasted for thousands of hours.
When you said "died" what do you mean?
It exploded
Shaft broke
Seals started leaking
These pumps are easily rebuilt, new parts are available from Depco Pump in Clearwater.
I am sure you have checked, but
-is the strainer clean and allowing sea water in
-if your exhaust manifold is raw water cooled, is it clogged
-what is the condition of the water induction elbow
Excessive back pressure from a clogged manifold or induction elbow could maybe cause blown shaft seals
Where did you get the pumps? Save them and let's investigate.
Maybe it is the Chickcharnies, you could have offended them...

$600 for a raw water pump for a Perkins? Dayum Reggie, I would have driven to Stuart with a new pump and changed it for that!
...........that was just to get the pump!.. changed it myself. pretty good at it now.
When you said "died" what do you mean?
It exploded
Shaft broke
Seals started leaking
........this one the drive tangs on the input end of the shaft broke off. This is the second pum which died that way. the other 3 were bad seals.
These pumps are easily rebuilt, new parts are available from Depco Pump in Clearwater.
I am sure you have checked,
..........I've had two rebuilt by depcopumps which also died. i sent one of my two dead pumps to them on Tuesday and heard from them today that it was beyond rebuild.
but
-is the strainer clean and allowing sea water in
.........yes. checked daily before startup.
-if your exhaust manifold is raw water cooled, is it clogged
....... no
-what is the condition of the water induction elbow
.........good
Excessive back pressure from a clogged manifold or induction elbow could maybe cause blown shaft seals
.......no doubt, but not likely to cause broken shafts.
