It used to mean "somebody older than I am" but I've noticed that what stares back at me from the mirror these days looks like an old guy. But that can't be... I'm not old! I'm still physically active and mentally alert! I single-hand my boats! So I grin when I'm talking about old guys and still carrying this mental image of myself as a 30-year-old. Feel like one of those but that's not what other people see. Chris - The question to ask yourself is how old would you tell people you were if you had no idea how old you were. Paul

Somebody wrote about a study of older adults' self-image. Most have a mental picture of themselves being about 35. I agree. I'm 62, closing in on 63, and don't really feel a bit older than 35. I know more and have better judgment now, and I have to take pills to pee effectively now, but not much else has changed. That's why it's so surprising to look in the mirror and see what other people see, not what I feel like. If we didn't have mirrors, I'd say "about 35." They'd say, "I dunno...all old people look alike." A couple years back I handled a case involving disputed real estate boundaries. The other lawyer and I negotiated back and forth on the phone, and eventually agreed to meet with the clients and examine the property. We met at a parking lot to form a caravan to the parcel. I waited and big expensive car drove up in this rather modest location, so I figured it was the other lawyer. I got out and introduced myself. "Gee," he said, "you sounded younger on the phone." Ouch. I was tempted to reply that he sounded smarter on the phone, but I didn't. (We won.) Every time I sand the bottom of the boat--by hand--I promise myself to hire it out next time. Never do. Some day age will surpass finances as the deciding factor. It's by hand because one boat is in the boat barn where power sanding, even with dust collection, is forbidden, and the other is outdoors, distant from AC power. Chris Campbell

Like I have said many times, I am 62 but feel as good as when I was 26, but perhaps that is because my memory is failing.
