Caulking Recommendations
Ash2010-04-14 18:29
Hi all,
I need to do some caulking around my Cal 25 pop top hatch trim... getting lots of water inside. I'm hoping to avoid the "this is a stickup" prices at certain 'marine' stores on the 'west' coast. How about if I use a normal exterior caulk from my local hardware store? Anybody do this? Results? What brand or types might be recommended?

naw....Use 3M good quality caulk, and take the trim off and re-seal it. The screws are loose that hold it snug, this will save your deck too!

So I'm not exactly sure how the 3 pieces of wood "frame" or trim of the pop top cockpit opening is attached to the deck... I assume screwed in with little wood plugs hiding the screws? Or is the whole thing glued on?

lfsmarine in Bellingham. I think it was a third the cost for silkaflex 291
as WM. I like Silkaflex 291 much better than 3M. Silkaflex 291 is similar
to 3M 4200. Never use 5200 on anything you even might want to remove. The
LOT means long open time and allows you more time to work.
See my web site for a link. http://l-36.com/stuff.php?menu=8
I would only use hardware calk if you really enjoy doing that job and want
to make sure you can do it again soon.

But BIG WARNING: DO NOT use 3M 5200, a highly tenacious polyurethane
adhesive goo if it's something you will ever want to be able to remove
in the future. For simple sealing purposes, try 3M 4000 (not 4200,
which is a slightly less sticky 5200). 5200 is just too permanent for
most purposes. They used it extensively in building our local wooden
schooner. One big advantage of wooden boats is that they are modular:
you can take 'em apart and replace pieces. But if the pieces were
joined with 5200, the disassembly process is destructive and you will
exercise all the worst parts of your vocabulary. I do not allow 5200 on
my boats.

Caulking Recommendations - CAL 25 Hatch Frame
Husar, Charlie [USA]2010-04-15 12:48 UTC
Ahhh, now we are hitting the areas of my CAL 25 knowledge. The frame is toe (angle) screwed from the underside going upward (15 or so wood screws). There may be a bit of glue or caulk in there as the plant used combinations of staples, glue, and screws to attach wood (something I am fighting right now on an interior rehab). Removing the screws should allow on to "coax" off the frame. Be careful at the forward corners since there are screws going in sideways and from front (with covering bungs). The whole thing might come out in one piece or the screws might have to come out with removal in 3 sections.
This whole frame is a critical caulking area since seepage gets into the deck wood sandwich at the edge and has no exit. Water builds up and rots the plywood over time resulting in soft deck (also happens due to poorly caulked hardware on the deck). The original documentation never mentioned these items. They did not know. We learned it the hard way.
Yes, 3M 4000 and a wet finger (and plenty of rags since one drop of the sealant can cover two zip codes if left to migrate on its own. Ooops, got some on my finger. Oh no, I touched the deck. Geez, now it's on my elbow. How did it get on my shirt? Oh s___, I sat in it...
Please note that some deck parts (e.g., Lewmar rope clutches) say no polysulfide or polyurethane. In that case I use silicone.
Also have some tricks to keeping down water build up between the hatch frame and teak deck support beam during rain or sloppy sailing.
Cheers, Anyway
Charlie

Great description, Charlie. Made me laugh. The only substance that's
more insidious is that black asphalt roof patch goo.

Next part of the lots of water is the accumulation of water between the hatch frame and the external teak deck stringer. I've been putting limber holes (look like little mouse holes) in the teak pieces to drain the area between hatch and stringer. Another photo op. Forgot to take that shot
I've taken some pictures of my rigging, and am assembling a dissertation for those who expressed interest. The cockles of my heart were warmed by the response. If you ever had your cockles warmed, you know what that can be like.
Cheers
