Good day. No adverse winds. some sailing at 8.4 mph with jib only. speed probably augmented by tide.
1 sucessful minor repair. 1 minor park job.
Anchored tonight out in the open in the middle of nowhere. We avoided anchoring near trees and shrubs to avoid bugs. Bad bugs last night and this morning. None tonight! No Christmas carols either, though.
Stopped a little earlier tonight with 50 miles made good.

In '95, Patti and I took a sailing class to learn to sail. Great class, a
full week long class with daily sailing and classroom lessons. One of the
daily lessons and sailing experience was to learn how to anchor.
"What's the first thing you do when going into an anchorage?"
"Uh. Get the anchor ready" -"No"
"start the motor" - "good idea, but not always necessary"
"OK, the first thing you do is...Put the bug screens in the hatches!"
Reggie, if you don't have them, stop and get some bug screens for your
hatches! We bought a few of the "campmore" olive drab screens (3x5) and use
clothes pins to attach to the bimini to create an enclosed cockpit. Much
cooler than hiding below.
This will help you enjoy the sundowners as you travel the ICW through the
swamps
What's the Mile Markers did you pass today?

We have several opening ports with screens. those are the only ones we open.
We were told, several years ago, about a spray sold at ACE hardware stores, to spray on the screens to keep even the smallest bugs from entering. A repellant, I believe. anyone know of it?

Reggie,
You might want to pick up some Ortho Max insect spray. It is nearly odorless, non-staining, and it kills and repels bugs as small as gnats. Available at most hardware stores. It lasts for up to (locale dependent) 3 months. I use it here in Michigan at the beginning of the season, and maybe once before winter haul out.
Spray around the hatches and any other openable covers, and even on your dock lines to keep the spiders away.
I also use it at home for the same pests. The Admiral loves it...

Bugs?!! There aren't many bugs that brave the Pacific Northwet's rain. I've never carried or needed a bug screen for our boat.

thanks we'll try it. We sprayed the screens with cutters and had a relatively bug free but hot evening. I guess we need to get some screens for the large opening hatches.
