"It was a dark and stormy....."
r good2010-04-19 00:30 UTC
It was a dark and stormy, oh no, hazy and breezy day. Good time to bake! I had to do minor surgery on my sourdough bread. It didn’t want to play, so I cheated and added yeast. Second oh no! but it smells OK. “Planned over” chili from the freezer with cornbread. No jalapeño’s for the cornbread, so tried a substitute—son-in-laws- hot sauce. One drop—more than enough. Just call me “Hot Lips Houlihan” going to have fun tonight! Baking requires doing lots of dishes! Time for Tums and bed.

Tom,
mm-mmm-mm! that Dark and Stormy sounds really good.
Most Ginger Ales are weak in the Ginger Dept.(I discovered that after buying some premium ginger ale in a small glass bottle with an old fashioned clamped on metal cap. (wooowee was that good!) Maybe you can substitute cheep Ginger Ale and add a hefty dose of fresh ginger? And Black Rum, I nevah hoid of it, and I nevah seen none, least on the shelves of the big Mkt. Chains. So what can we use to darken some common generic Rum, a few spoonfulls of black strap molasses...if we can find it? And dark and stormy? We got early morning and late night clouds along the coast now, a sure sign of Springtime in So.Cal., other wise know as "June Gloom". That can mean pea soup fog, and woe be unto those who know not how to program/use a GPS, or who are still trying to use a recalcitrant 8 channel Garmin Plus like me (I bought a model 76 map on Ebay but haven't gotten around to using it/programming it. Want to use the way points off my old unit, if I could figure out
how to connect the two with cable, or PC, or whatever. Anyways, late night, thick fog and/or moonless night, imitation Dark and Stormy will have to do here. (and hopefully the old GPS cooperates as I approach the rock jetties on my way in, I'd hate to explain to the 'shore patrol' that I was an ex Marine brushing up my invasion landing technique with my classic plastic. I'm currently reading up a thick book on Okinawa, called "Tennozan" by George Feifer. War is more than hell, and yes, the Atomic Bomb was a horrible blessing for Japan and USA alike.

Jerry , I guess you are a bit far from the Caribbean Isles to catch the nuances. It is not Black Rum, it is Goslings Black Seal Rum. There is a Black Seal (the arf! arf! variety) on the label.
Also, our very own Alfred Poor would maintain that it is hot peppers that give ginger beer it's distinctive zitz. Alfred makes an elixir that gives Barritts a run for its money, but I will leave him to elucidate.

Black Seal you say?
We got lot's a black seals here, all over the place! Usually one or two lolly-ying inside the Marina and a few outside the breakwater at any given time. So, I just check out and see what Rum they are drinking?
I think enough fresh ginger and your run of the mill 'girly' ale will have plenty of bite. Then, all we need is a foggy, moonless night, which are coming right up on the calender. Heck, mite just have one tonite!

Aha,
I've seen this same seal hanging around the end of my dock, balancing a big wooden keg on the tip of his nose, accompanied by raucous laughter in a O'Day 27 (built in the same plant as many of our Cals), two slips north, owned a friend of mine, Cap'tn Robert Lee, the Great great grandson of General Robert E. Lee (no I'm not making this up, at least not, the Robert Lee part, anyways, and not the drinking part, or the raucous laughter part. They, he and his wife to be, more often than not bring libations over to our slip as we pull in after a race.
Life is good. Sail hard!

GOSLINGS "BLACK SEAL"
This Bermuda rum
used to be bottled in used bottles recycled from the local British
military
encampment. It had, until the 1920s, or so, been available only
straight out of the barrel! The Gosling brothers would bottle their
rum,
purchased in bulk, in these used champagne bottles and to ensure they
were
stoppered properly, they'd put a black sealing wax on top of the
bottle.
The rum became known as "Gosling's Black Seal." Today they use a
black seal as their logo, though this marine animal had nothing to do
with rum
production. It's a dark, 3 year old (or so) bottling. $22.99

Steve,
I have tried Godlings ginger beer and although it isn't bad, it seems to
be more tame than Barretts. Your taste will differ, but I think you
might agree. You may have to do a test at your next raft up. That would
be horrible now, wouldn't it?

>>>It was a dark and stormy, oh no, hazy and breezy day. Good time to bake! I had to do minor surgery on my sourdough bread. It didn’t want to play, so I cheated and added yeast. Second oh no! but it smells OK. “Planned over” chili from the freezer with cornbread. No jalapeño’s for the cornbread, so tried a substitute—son- in-laws- hot sauce. One drop—more than enough. Just call me “Hot Lips Houlihan” going to have fun tonight! Baking requires doing lots of dishes! Time for Tums and bed.
