Washington Manure Spill
cal40pir82010-04-17 20:44
Hey folks! I stumbled across this little tidbit on the net. Washington
Manure Spill
<http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2010/04/14/Washington-manure-spill-conta\
minates-river/UPI-23911271283871/> Now make sure your "Y" valve is in
the proper position :-S
It's just more proof that the legislators are making dung heaps out of
rabbit turds when it comes to recreational boats and their waste
processes. Don't get me wrong, I am all for not dumping unprocessed
crap in the water. It's just that recently proposed "no-discharge"
legislation on the east coast seems to be over kill, expensive and
inconvenient for the boat owner. Thanks for letting me rant.

I think you can still pee over the side. Did you know that most people who
fall off a boat and drown have their flys down? Did you know that almost
nobody falls off of sailboats? Did you know I am making all this up?

Well, that was a weird, stray click of the mouse. Sorry about that...
What I was trying to post is:
Yep, I've seen the 'peeing over the side' comments on this site before.
Do it all the time myself except in polite company. It's a lot more
expedient than running below.
I've heard the myth of the fly open drowning victims since I was a boy.
It makes sense since after a few beers and lost balance, guys do it over
the rail. It doesn't take a leap in logic to assume that some folks have
fallen overboard.
Speaking of overboard; I have fallen overboard when the lifeline webbing
on Beths' Cal-27 gave way during a light air race while slowly catching
a Ranger 33, Este, that we had never beaten before. My esteemed foredeck
guy, Dr. Bill, was in the cockpit at the same time. When the webbing let
loose, I did a backflip over the side while still holding the tiller. I
jammed the poor guys leg between the tiller and the settee. I didn't
let go right away and kept telling the crew to keep racing! Meanwhile
Bill was in agony until Beth took the tiller and I could get hold of the
side of the boat while Bill helped me scramble back in. Also, my sister
was present who had never sailed before and thought I was nuts. She
freaked out and I had to make her promise to never tell mom that I fell
overboard. She told. This was when I was 42 years old. Arrggh! (Mom
still gives me grief about it. I'm glad she's still around to do so,
but, sheesh!) We lost to Este by about 30 seconds. That was a painful
2nd place! I'm glad my crew was there and that it wasn't rough out. It
could very easily have been more of a disaster.
As for the pending legislation in Maryland making it a no discharge
zone, I wish I were making it up. Go Here.

We're all slow learners, aren't we? I went over the handlebars of my
bicycle twice before I figured out that a helmet might be a good idea.
Maybe it was too late by then. I've been wearing my inflatable PFD when
single-handing in the spring (before the water warms up) and when
there's any danger of going over. At some point you worry about your
luck running out.

A friend got knocked overboard by his boom. His red hat and whistle enabled
him to raise a powerboat nearby. Otherwise, he would not have been able to
tell the story. I started wearing a red hat and a whistle after hearing that
story. I also use a tether when single handing

I've been sailing since 1971 so I think the odds are on my side. Never the less, Interestingly 3 times on sf bay once on aproaching Kaneohe in the 1988 Pac cup. Last time in the 2009 GGYC summer friday nite Beer cans. A crash jibe to avoid starboard tacker put me over the side still clutching the tiller. My foredeck never saw me in the water. My Trimmer says that I said " Would please help me back on board" He thought my politeness was funny. So much for a catholic school education. I was in deep contemplation for a week after this event. It was reported to the RC and the RC asked me if there was anyone OB from Rambler. My reply--- Define overboard__ I never let go of the rail and I was back aboard damn soon.. And so I told him. We finished 2nd on handicap. How about that to demoralise the competition. Next Race Sausalito YC Tuesday series, a week from t'day. Am still looking for 1 more crew. Some NEVER
grow up!
My Best, Mike
