2-27 cockpit question
calden2010-04-21 14:45
Hey all:
I've written in with a few questions about the Cal 2-27. I'm looking at one to purchase. Thanks for the responses on and off list so far. Helpful.
Another question for you: The cockpit design includes the wrap-around seating bench that is right in front of the companionway. This is where the traveler track is located. The boat I'm coming from did not have this kind of cockpit and one could "walk" right through the companionway.
I sat in the cockpit of the proposed buy last fall, and it felt okay, but I was aware of the "blockage" of the companionway. Haven't yet sailed it, and now the weather is warmer up here I will probably be doing a sea trial within a few weeks.
But my question is, for those 2-27 folks out there: have you ever felt boxed in by this cockpit design? Does it ever feel like you are climbing up and over the seat to get down in the cabin? Does it effectively make the cockpit feel cramped, or does it just turn out to be another place to sit on easy sails when the traveler isn't tinkered with much?
Thanks for your observations...

Carlos,
The traveler on Magic (1979 Cal 2-27) is exactly as you describe. We also have a binnacle/wheel installed. There is adequate cockpit seating for two crew forward of the binnacle while under way, while the helmsman has the option of standing, sitting on the stern, or sitting in the cockpit aft of the wheel. The rest of the crew are normally on the rail or busy fetching me another cold beer.
I agree, the 2-27 cockpit is a bit on the small side. At anchor, we move the mainsheet traveler full to port, put cushions over the traveler track, and make the best of the situation. There are always tradeoffs.

When I was sailing on Beth's Cal-27 pop top, it took awhile before
getting used to the traveler being right in front of the hatch since it
was aft of the tiller on my Cal-25. I stubbed my toes and cussed at it a
couple times at first, but then resigned myself to remembering it was
there. Before long I didn't even notice it. It was convenient to use
since it was in front of you and you didn't have to turn around to grab
the control lines.

Carlos,
Nemesis has a similar cockpit set-up, and yes, it does lead to a
cramped feeling, as well to bruising on the knees and butt. That
said, it provides a bridgedeck which lessens the cockpit volume and
prevents flooding at the companionway in the event that you are
"pooped". I find the trade-off to be acceptable, and have devised
various cushion placements to overcome most of the negatives. Enjoy
your new boat!

I've had my Cal 2-27 for over 20 years and I don't even notice the step. In
fact when on a friend's boat without a step I find it strange. The only
downside is when you sit on the black track on a hot summer day while
wearing shorts!
