Here's one. No Contact Tachometer <http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4YE85?Pid=search> But I bet you are thinking of something permanently mounted? Mike M. On 4/21/2010 3:44 PM, r good wrote: > photoelectric tachometer

McMaster Carr.com · · Stroboscopes, Borescopes & Inspection Mirrors Noncontact Digital Tachometer/Stroboscopes · Range: Tachometer: 5 to 99,999 rpm; Stroboscope: 100 to 99,999 rpm and flashes per min. · Accuracy: ±0.1% of reading Measure rpm and analyze motion with one compact, portable instrument. In the stroboscope function, these units emit short pulses or flashes of light that match the rotation of equipment, producing the illusion that a rotating object is stopped. This allows you to examine the surface of the object. Units have a 5-digit LCD display that shows 0.1 to 1 rpm/flashes per minute and an ABS plastic housing. Furnished with reflective tape and a plastic carrying case. Size is 9" Lg. x 3" Wd. x 2" Dp. Operate on four AA batteries (included). Choose with or without a certificate of calibration traceable to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). Tachometer function is noncontact and stores last, minimum, and maximum readouts. Measuring distance range is 2" to 12". Stroboscope function has a measuring distance range of 2" to 36" and a flash duration of 60 to 1000 microseconds. <javascript:chgimg('EEDAC');> http://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/116/gfx/small/1412tp1s.gif Each Tachometer/Stroboscope <javascript:TargetLink('TR1192','tr','PT11921','1412T1');> 1412T1 $347.36 Tachometer/Stroboscope with NIST Certificate <javascript:TargetLink('TR1193','tr','PT11931','1412T2');> 1412T2 454.99 Reflective Tape Roll (5 ft. Did I mention that the one from Harbor Freight is only $40. Looks just like the $200 one from Granger. But the Granger one is .01% accurate where the Harbor Freight one is only .05% So, your 2000 RPM measurement might be off by 1PRM if you are cheap and buy the Harbor Freight one like I would. They will both go to 100,000 RPM in case you want to calibrate your air tools. Actually, my guess is that they are not as accurate as they say but so what. I didn't see the harbor freight one but I think that's the way to go as well. Especially since you'll only use it once a year unless you want to see exactly what your transmission gear ratio is etc. Mike M. I have not dealt with these folks as I have with Harbor Freight Tools but Amazon has them as low as $21.25 Allen On Wed, Apr 21, 2010 at 5:30 PM, mike <mi… [at] wahini.org> wrote: > > > I didn't see the harbor freight one but I think that's the way to go as > well.
