Re: [Cal_Boats] Magic - Miami to Key Largo Race - April 17th (Rick)
You must have known Bill Berry and John Strader of Flying Scot fame in Seabrook, Logan Gore who sailed out of Kemah Boat Club and Ken who sailed Thistles all over the Gulf Coast representing Seabrook Sailing Club. The designer and builder of the Gulf Coast 23, 20, 16, and 14 was a Seabrook Sailing Club founding member. I sailed a club championship in Gulf Coast 16's. If you can find a Flying Scot in the northwest and don't care about re-sale or racing it would certainly serve you well. I have beached mine on Travis Lake in Austin many times with camping gear and cookstoves all stored up under the bow. Pulling the centerboard all the way up gives you 6" draft and at 800#'s she is easy to re-float after beaching! It's all good in a sailboat! Wish I knew someone to refer you to up there, but I don't. Good luck and good sailing!

Thanks Donald. I grew up sailing out of San Leon down there on Galveston
bay back in the 60’s and 70’s. I crewed on Lightnings, Scots, Thistles, Gulf
Coast 14’s and Gulf Coast 20’s and a Pearson Ensign out of the Houston Yacht
Club. I live in a gated community with its own marina on Lake Whatcom up here
in Bellingham now. I am just looking for something to play around with day
sailing on the lake. No intention of racing. I ran into the same thing in my
searches. The Scot doesn’t seem to exist in the Northwest at all that I can
tell. That surprises me. Before my Cal 2-29, I owned and actively raced a
Thistle. I can and do single hand my 29 often, it’s just got to the point
that I don’t use her enough. I am also very involved in my other passion
(music) and there aren’t enough hours in the day or days in the week. It
breaks my heart to see my cal sitting unused. A boat kept at the lake would be
close enough to my home to get more use and the marina is well set up for dry
sailing.
