A-4 forward slippage resolved
Greets:
The repairs to the gearbox have been completed thanks to Moyer's A-4
manual. The job took a few hrs to complete but really simple.
Note...to others, read the complete instructions and follow all the
steps including disconnecting the shift cable. This will save you a
lot of time.
Basically the job is simple.
- remove the shift lever cotter pin and disassemble once you are sure
the lever is in neutral by spinning the shaft with a pair of vice
grips.
- remove the cover plate 4 bolts and casket
- back off the locking nut
- crack forward (clockwise facing the propeller) the adjuster one
notch at a time
- tighten up the locking nut
- assemble system
- lubricate all cable components (also at the binnacle)
Tested engine to 3000 rpm with boat firmly tied to dock, no slippage.
Good to go.
Awaiting weather to even out at Cape May and Atlantic city. Since this
is going to take a while, the next step will be to install the
autopilot system since the AC and DC power systems have now been
stabilized. Should be a day job.
The only other associated task that was required was to move the shift
lever down to the second notch as moving the tensioner resulted in
greater but smoother movement which would interfere with the wheel.
Actually have a real neutral now with a defined stop position. As the
lever was bend from years of usage, got lucky and found a local
contractor with a metal cut off blade on his grinder working a job
here at the marina. Two minutes later and some three inches were cut
off the lever. Pop it back into place and everything is now working
better then before. Moyer's manual just paid for itself. Great
instructions.
The more I become familiar with the A-4 the more I appreciate it.
Build like a brick, strong and reliable. Once I get home I would like
to play with the carborator as its currently not setup properly but
this requires both specialized tools and a bit more learning.
All for now, enjoying some fresh caught clams from the local clammers.
Nice night, six foot tide is in and the winds are howling at 25 knots.
Good time to enjoy the comfort of a floating dock.
Best regards
