Evinrude shift lever

Cal friends, Whee, Cal 20 #1220, the lovely /Martha C/, is floating happily on her mooring--the first boat in the mooring field this year. We splashed this morning in sunshine, with a light north wind and temps at about 50º F. It's a good start for the summer. The glitch was in the mechanical systems. The old 6 hp Evinrude started, bless her old soul, and when all was ready I shifted into reverse to back out of the launching slip. After a graceful arc, I flipped the level into forward and it kind of flopped around and the boat continued backing. Oops. Turn engine off, fiddle with shift lever, try again, and on the second try I found forward. I can't remember how the lever and shift rod mechanism are hooked up inside the outboard's leg. Can anybody give me a quick tutorial so when I go out tonight to take it apart, there won't be any big surprises? The OB is from the late '60s, that same little 6 that OMC made forever. This one has a long shaft (added later by a previous owner). Thanks, Chris Campbell

You cd try looking at the drawings here to get an idea: http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E&s1=bec94f48-4e68-4924-9452-705191371348 Select make, year, motor, then assembly, then blow up the drawings. (There's a zoom button top left). I could always row the dinghy and tow the Cal 20 behind but it would be a slow passage. Once the mast is stepped I can sail on & off the mooring and worry about the outboard at leisure, but to get the mast stepped I need to be able to power into a narrow channel. I will study the situation tonight after work, hoping that it's just the setscrew securing the shift handle to the lever that moves the shift rod. Chris Campbell > >

Chris I had a Johnson 5.5hp from the 60's. and if this is the same engine, and i think it probably is, you have to remove the powerhead to get to the shift lever parts. It was a long time ago so I could be mistaken. And that seems to be where mine is making a rattling noise. I did not try disassembly aboard last night, because if the drive shaft comes out of the seal, the lube will leak all over. For now, mine seems to be lodged in "Forward" so I can at least power in the right direction. Chris Campbell > > > > >
