Hi, Folks. If you decide on the straight shot to Annapolis, watch for some stronger S to SW winds overnight. Would certainly make the boat move, though. Also, the mouth of the Potomac around Smith Point is kind of like the Hatteras of the Bay. Can be some squirrelly things going on there. Many shallows and a lot of darkness on the Eastern shore. It can look eerie at night. Solomons Island at the Patuxent River is a good bail-in point. Farther south, the maybe Fishing Bay, the Little Wicomico into Fairport/Reedville. I am not knowledgeable on the good hiding places on the Eastern Shore. As they say, "Fair winds and following seas." Cheers Charlie

looks like we may stay another night or two in the Portsmouth-Norfolk area. between small craft warnings, unfamiliarity with accessible anchorages along the way, a broken alternator mount bolt found this morning during morning checkout, a less than punctual start this morning thanks to, in part, delicious blackstrap molasses and milled flax seed sourdough pancakes with eggs and coffee, preparations to accomplish before heading to "sea", etc. Where to find a grade 8 fine thread, probably metric bolt on a Sunday, how to get there, how to remove the broken portion,... I have easy outs and a cordless drill, but I'm probably going to have to get a replacement inverter to allow charging it. more fun to be had! Hi Reggie: I just did the trip from Deltaville, Va. at the mouth of the Rapahannock to Galesville just south of Annapolis last weekend. 55 miles from Deltaville to Solomons the first day. Averaged about 6 kts with following seas motorsailing took about 9 hrs. Second day was 45 miles to Galesville..about 7 hours at 5.5 kts average. The mouth of the Potomic was the roughest but easily managed as we were there at a slack tide. Hi, Les. See you've been doing some touring. For those uninitiated, Les is a long time participant and patron for the Annapolis Good Old Boat Regatta in October. (Advertising to follow.) The GOBR is an annual weekend celebration of sailing/racing, music, camaraderie, and Alfred Poor's Dark and Stormy's. I can complete Les' picture since I brought a CAL 25 from Deale to Annapolis last Thursday. It was 4.5 hours against the current with a 6 horse outboard. One has to go the wrong direction for a while since there is a long shoal that sticks out into Herring Bay. Nominal would be 3 hours if just passing by Deale in the Bay. As with many places, the current in the Bay is a factor. Just hang in the shipping channel (or deeper water) with favorable current, and hang to the shallows when current is foul. http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/currents10/tab2ac5.html#45 See you soon, Reggie and Barbara. thanks for the info. We may have a slower time of it given predicted winds by the time we can leave.
