cal 2-27 table
zuni19742010-05-03 18:16
Hello, I have recently purchased my cal 2-27 and among several things, (which I am sure I will get to in other posts)my original table has been replaced by one part RV leg and one part cheap laminate wood without the leaf extentender. I have seen several 2-27's with the great set up which had a storage unit hidden and only seen when the table was put down. Are there any places to get the replacement or a replica? Maybe most importantly, is there a Cal replacement/retrofit shop anywhere? Thanks for all the help and any extra advice.
Cheers, Colin

Colin,
I have a 2-27, hull #627, with the original table & storage unit. I highly suspect that you will need to have a custom replacement made, and I can provide you with photographs and measurements if you want.
Just to let you know, the table/storage unit probably weighs in the range of 60+ lbs. It's solid wood.

Colin, sorry to say that about everything for a CAL is custom. Someone once asked me if there is a CAL 25 parts list they could get. I tried to look respectful, but almost busted a gut holding in my laughter. Customization is fun, but time consuming. Best of luck.
Cheers

Thank you my friend, that would be wonderful if you could provide all that info and any pics you can. Actually any photos of your Cal would be great. I love to see other 2-27s and see the mods that have been done and how much has been kept to original. There does not seem to be that many photos out there, especially of interior spaces. Thanks again Michael.
Cheers,
Colin

Well I am a jokester, so I hope I gave you a laugh. I believe my laughter will turn to the old 70's group blood, sweat and tears on this boat. HA HA. It is hard to be a perfectionist and own a boat. Almost an oxymoron scenario. So, customization it is, I look forward to the challenge. Thanks for the reply Charlie.

Colin,
I uploaded photos of Magic's table to the group site, photo album "Cal 2-27 Table", click here. It is
primarily constructed of 3/4" width hardwood (Mahogany). Overall, it
is 17 1/2" wide and 38 3/4" high, with the "shelf" depth of 4". The
shelf fids are 3 1/2" high and 3/16" thick. Let me know what other
information you may need. Good luck.

Thank you Michael, I really appreciate it. Also, put some more photos of your great boat up. Would love to compare and contrast and see more of what I need to do in regards of setup. Also, how does your 2-27 fair in rough seas, long travels, etc. Love any info you can provide.
Cheers,
Colin

Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: cal 2-27 table (Colin)
Michael D2010-05-10 01:01 UTC
Colin,
I bought Magic in December 2003. She was a donation boat and probably destined for the boneyard. We towed it from Fort Lauderdale to our dock in Pompano. I have been through every system at least once, including a repower. Last fall we stepped the rig for rebuild and Awlgripping. I have literally hundreds of photos. With the exception of bottom jobs, my wife and I have done all the work at the dock. What are you interested in seeing?
As for rough seas, I have done my best to avoid foul weather. However, last month we got caught 3-5 miles offshore. It was blowing hard, and the rain was stinging my face. We were able to get the headsail furled before things got nasty, but the mainsail was fully hoisted. About all we could do was keep the bow into the wind under power and work our way towards shore. It literally blew the lettering off the leach of the Miami to Key Largo race flag that we had attached to the lower shroud. The Windex also now has a strange list to port. It's hard to judge the sea conditions, but sitting here writing this, the waves were higher than my living room ceiling.
My wife got a bit scared. I was more concerned about a freighter showing up, since we were in 500-600 feet of water about 5 miles from Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale). All in all, Magic handled the seas as one would hope. My friend was not far from me on his 36 foot Catalina. He had a bunch of sick people aboard puking in the cockpit. He later told me he saw 40+ kts.
We are heading back to the Bahamas late June for Regatta Time in Abaco. We did a similar trip two years ago; spending three weeks in the islands.
