looking at a 1967 Cal 30
rnc7252010-05-10 01:02
have only sailed a 26' Macgregor over the last 10 years. Am wondering how much tougher it may be to 'drive' and 'park' her in the marina. Also wondering what an Atomic 4 gas engine will smell like at anchor/dock, the danger in a gas inboard and the upkeep. Also, am I crazy for even thinking of buying a 1967 boat? The previous owner has redone most everything, the boat looks great and such, just a bit wary of the big (for me) upgrade.
Thoughts? Observations? I truly appreciate all help.

I have a similar but older engine and it doesn't smell at all. No more than
your car, actually less because it doesn't spill any oil on the exhaust like
an old car. My engine is 55 years old. I have had to tune it up every
decade or so and I did blow a head gasket after 50 years. I have also had
to replace water pumps but the Atomic 4 may have a better setup, don't know.
There really isn't much to them and therefore, not much to go wrong. What
does go wrong I can fix.
I would be curious if anyone on the list has heard of safety problems (real
ones not potential ones) with gas engines.

Hank Easom blew the deck off Yucca when he did not let he blower do it's job
.. Anyone who is serious uses a diesel engine. Hank still uses a gas engine.
I cross Oceans with a diesel
. A gas job is a toy!

So Hank is not serious? And by the way, I have on occasion (perhaps once
every 5 years) started my engine without the blower. It is only a problem
if you have a gas leak, and then I guess it can be a big problem. I also
had a gas leak several years back. Had to replace the tank. But you can
smell it. It is my opinion that if you are careful, they are fine. You can
probably have problems with diesel engines as well, at least according to
the article below
Here is an interesting reference http://www.yachtsurvey.com/GasDiesel.htm

Bobby,
Gas engines are fine. The Universal Atomic 4 is a reliable, safe, easily repaired engine. The Cal30 is a great s.
Reailing boat. Don't be swayed because it isn't a diesel. The condition of the entire boat is the issue. If it's a gem for a reasonable price, and you like it, make an offer.---
