After yesterdays race in 35 knot winds I read this as a different boat. Breezy, a Catalina 27 made it about 8 miles off shore before she decided enough was enough. She just laid on her side and could do nothing more in the gusts. Out Patient, my Cal 29 didn t make it as far. We made it up to the first gusts over 25 when all of a sudden a small hole appeared in the #3. To me I could saw a bubble in the leach, then we got stopped and all I could hear was a loud ripppp. There was nothing but pieces here and there. We got it down and went home. Only 3 boats made it around Anacapa Island and home. Everyone is safe and the damage is a sail. Other boats only broke hardware, like shackles, slides and slugs. Good thing this was a race. Wow! More fun in the Channel. The Pacific is always placid except of course when it's not. Glad you made it back in. Is the sail toast, or do you take it over to Gary for a few stitches? Toast, pieces are missing, maybe I can get something different from Minnies or Bacon sails. Randy, Nice going! I went down to my boat late Sat. evening as there was talk on my dock of an informal race and party for one of the dock rats, er..bachelors.. who was getting hitched. I talked to the bride to be..the couple lives on an O'Day 27 (a Bangor Punta boat like Cal's) I missed the party which was actually Friday, but I did see white caps in our G basin, and thought better of going out as it was nearly sunset, anyway. I went off to get some freebie mags at West Marine, and while there I remembered I needed to replace my cam cleat on my fiddler block of my main sheet (it kept letting go of the sheet, very discouraging during a race)..., so I went back to remove my main sheet, and hurried back with it to WM with ten minutes to spare before closing. A young but knowledgeable sailor/racer helped me find a large plastic Harken model which should work($22). The metal equivalent from Schaefer was $79 bucks. We'll see how the conversion works, as filing the teeth of the 48 year old brass cam cleat wasn't working anymore, the teeth having been worn down to the gums!
