Hi, I discovered by accident that the cal 29 boom (12 foot 3 in.) is the same extrusion shape as the venture mcgregor 22 mast which if mostly intact can usually fit the cut you need from it. If you are lucky to have this shape on your rig and find an old piece.Last year we found Seals Spars and Rigging in Alameda or SF bay area has some cal extrusions or machines for manufacturing. www.sealsspars.com. We got one of their deck plates this last year. In my case, my dad's Venture mast snapped above the spreaders during a tabernacling maneuver. I was given this extrusion and threw it in my yard 20 years ago. When my boom snapped at the vang,on a Wednesday night race, and I tried to get a new extrusion, it was almost impossible, time-wise and cost-wise. Then, I remembered weed-whacking and rediscovering this mast. Identical. So, I used my compound miter saw, with a special sawblade for aluminum and cut to length. Then, notched for the gooseneck and filed and duplicated all shapes. Removed the two end pieces which fit nicely (used clamps to temporarily bend ends of extrusion to allow easy fit). Index for screw holes before you put in the ends or plan to drill all new holes. Then when all parts (cheek blocks, etc.) are put back on I suggest a bottom drain hole in a sturdy location near the end of the boom so you can rise salt water out. This is when I wished I had the end-boom traveler. The old boom exploded at the same point as yours and the crew saved (one got a knock on the head) by the rope foot in the main. It was paper thin inside. When we rerigged last summer after a year of use, it was still good and we found our mast to be free of the problems our boom had. Leading Edge repaired our sail and we were back in action on the very next Wednesday. It is where the boom vang attaches. I've tried to have it repaired but am told that is too bad to repair. Does anyone know where I can pick up a boom for my Cal 2-30? Used (price) would be great. It is about 13'6" Thanks Robert
