Hul Number

Steve Simmons2010-05-29 15:46 UTC
I have a Cal 30 or a 2-30. Where can I find the Hul number to make a positive identification of what I have, The boat is a Katrina survivor and the paperwork only says it is a CAL 30. Thanks in advance>

Hi, Steve. A couple items. If you have a hull ID stamped into the exterior starboard stern, you have a 3-30. That requirement started in 1973. Otherwise you will have a hull number embedded in the glas on the interior stern (apparently either side is possible). Might be painted over. Does your backstay attach at the base of the transom? Is it a 15/16 rig? that would be a CAL 2-30. I believe the original CAL 30 has a 2 level cabin top going forward.. Welcome to the CAL Group and to CAL ownership, Steve. Lots of knowledge and lore in this group. Where are you and the boat located? Thanks Charlie, yes I am new to the group and new to the sailing world. I am located on Cherokee Lake around Morristown TN. It will be a cuple of days before I can get to the boat to check out the locations you suggested. Charlie, Good advice, I remember finding my hull number in the starboard lazarette following advice from our group. On another note, I am launching tomorrow! Yay! The yard has finished my engine exhaust. A 3 hour tour. Oh, oh, that sounds like deja vu. Just a trip up the Little Calumet, through the O'Brien lock, and on to the open lake, then six miles to Jackson Park Harbor. Weather should be good. Mostly flat water. Oh, first I have to write the check for the yard work. Then we launch. These guys have been here since 1942, and they are still in business. Third generation now, and they are good. Boats are what they do, and love, although they would deny that. They respect owners who know boats, powerboaters, or sailors. I had to earn that respect, but I am still subject to scorn when they think I'm not working, but just BS ing with other people. I could buy storage cheaper elsewhere, but it wouldn't be as much fun. "...when they think I'm not working, but just BS ing with other people." David, a definite boat yard danger, but also part of the mystique of working in the yard. Sometimes the onlookers (ontalkers?) are welcome, and other times one sure wishes they would evaporate. Hard to throw them out, tho.
