Morse Control
chris1232010-06-07 13:40 UTC
Greets:
Anyone have a side mounted Morse control head (the combo one, shift
and throttle) as I want to move both off the binnacle to the cockpit
side wall to avoid the headache of dealing with the pedistal bolts and
assorted agony....:) These came stock on tiller config;d cal 29"s and
possibly other Cals as well. Trying to keep the boat original to some
degree.
Please feel free to contact me off list.

We just installed the Spinlock "winch handle" throttle control, after years of stepping on the control handle and wrapping lines around... are now a thing of the past.
Simply use a winch handle when it is time to motor.
Remove when not needed.

Look interesting. Do they have a model for the shift control. I would prefer
to keep the boat stock simply considering resale value someday.

Guess I should provide more information. The throttle was moved off
the binnacle onto the side of the of the cockpit as the throttle cable
seized in the winter. It was 30 plus years old and we used all the
original parts off the binnacle to mount it on the cockpit side wall
port side below the locker lid. You have to crack the binnacle head to
replace the cable...not a nice job at all. Now the shifter cable is
showing signs of age so want to replace it as well. Hence the desire
to use an original morse control head if I can locate one. Found one
on craigslist but turned out to be a scam. So far have not come up
with one. There is one sitting is a toasted 29 in Chestertwon but have
to buy the boat to get the control head. I would consider it as the
boat is cheap but what to do with the boat? She was raced in her day
and is a total project boat cosmetically, and forward port bulkhead
needs to be replaced due to being stored with the mast up all these
years resulting in too much stress on the that side of the boat.

you'll find that keeping a boat "stock" won't enhance resail. It is not like a car. Upgrades in hardware are worth it for their usefullness to you. May not enhance resale value, but should not detract from it if properly done.

The Spinlock unit is both throttle and transmission shift.
Push the winch handle in deeper and the transmission is disengaged, so you can have throttle only, for charging batteries or making water.

I had a Morse control on Conquest but I found it in Minney's Chandlery
in Newport Beach. They don't make them anymore.

NO, that is not the same unit. The reason why I liked them is that the
handles come out when you are sailing. There is only the hub and
nothing to catch a sheet. That one has the handles attached all the
time and in the way. The old one is much better, especially for racing.

Thanks Mike. Thats why Im looking for an old one. So far found only
one but comes with a project and the yard is not ready to part out the
boat yet. Thats also why I like older boats as some stuff was just
designed better, not all mind you and certainly not against modernism
but in general when it comes to metal parts the old stuff tends to be
more solid, better designed and engineered/build. Strictly a function
of cost I would think.
Best regards
